NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE rrvri __) JvJ flffl® ^?G1@ SPECIALIZED BIBLIOGRAPHY SERIES APRIL 1986 Public Services Division National Library of Medicine Bethesda, Maryland 20894 U S DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES Public Health Service • National Institutes of Health MEDICINE AND THE ARTS April 1986 306 Selected Citations Compiled by lone Auston, Charlotte Moulton, Karen Patrias, and Joy Richmond SPECIALIZED BIBLIOGRAPHY SERIES This is one of a series of Specialized Bibliographies prepared and distributed by the Public Services Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). These bibliographies are usually the result of a combination of manual and computerized searching, utilizing databases produced by NLM and others. Specialized Bibliographies are therefore more comprehensive in coverage than those bibliographies produced under NLM's Literature Search series, which are limited to our own databases. The only criterion for inclusion of a published work in a Specialized Bibliography is its relevance to biomedicine. The format, ownership, or location of the materials are not considered. MEDICINE AND THE ARTS This bibliography was prepared in conjunction with the colloquium "Medicine and the Arts: Two Faces of Humanity" held at the National Library of Medicine on April 22, 1986. The colloquium was one of a series held in celebration of the Library's sesquicentennial. The subjects covered include both medical themes in art and literature and the physician as artist. Art therapy and music therapy have been excluded. Sources for the citations were primarily NLM's MEDLINE, HISTLINE, and CATLINE databases, therefore most items can be located in the Library's collections. Because of the volume of literature available on these subjects, only material published in English since 1980 was selected. The bibliography is extensive but not exhaustive; the exclusion of particular items is no reflection against their quality or usefulness. The purpose was to indicate to the audience the type and range of materials available and to provide a starting point for further investigation. Certainly NLM's History of Medicine Division, in particular the Prints and Photographs Collection, can supply a wealth of additional information. "Medicine and the Arts" has been divided into three parts: journal articles; periodicals that publish a number of articles on this subject or have separate columns or sections dealing with it; and monographs, including bibliographies.
