July 17th, 1832, in the stage of colapse. Was rubbed with camphorated mercurial ointment, until reaction was produced; he was then put under hospital treatment. 22d. Ptyalism being induced, was ordered small doses of sulphur, and a wash of the same for the mouth. At six o'clock, P. M. diarrhoea increasing, was ordered an anodyne enema. He was under medical treatment until 24th, when he died, at three o'clock, P. M. Number of persons brought into the hospital, - 412 Of whom were intemperate, - 188 Do. do. temperate, - - 154 Habits unknown, - - • - 70 4 E. W. aged forty- three, born In Ireland^ laborer, resided in Stanton-street; has had diarrahoea four days, attacked with cramps, vomiting, and purging, about noon ; and was admitted in the stage of colapse, at six o'clock, P. M . on 24th July. He was rubbed with camphorated mercurial ointment, and given hot toddy to drink— a little improved. Seven o'clock, P. M. was under hospital treatment, until 15th, and died at half-past one, A. IVI. being- ill only seven hours and a half. Number of intemperate who died, 112 Do. do. cured, - - 76 Do. temperate who died, 47 Do. do, cured, - - 107 5 J. V. aged thirty-two, born in England, blacksmith ; purging came on yesterday, and spasms and vomiting this morning; countenance sunken ; surface cold ; pulse scarcely perceptible; tongue cold and covered with yellow fur; spasms in the legs; admitted 27th July, at half-past ten o'clock, A. M. in state of colapse. Was ordered camphorated mercur. frictions ; sinapisms to the abdomen. Was under medical treatment until 27th, and died at half past eight o'clock P. M. after an illness of ten hours. Number, habits unknown, who died 26. do. do. cured 44. Which shows that the mortality has been greatest* with the intemperate' by far.. A* 6 N. W. Born in New -York, liveinGoeric street ; intemperate. Admitted at 12 o'clock, August 2d. was attacked with diarrhoea and- vomiting on the 31st July, had cramps last evening, secretion of urine scanty, surface of the body warm, great pain in the head ; tongue slightly furred. Was cupped on the temples and put under medical treatment. 5 O'clock . P. M. has vomited up to. this time every' few minutes. Tinct. Camph. and Black Drops, were given to allay the vomiting- One o'clock P. M. has vomited only once since, no passage from the bowels, since admission. Cramps in the extremities, severe ; countenance sunken ; extremities cold ; pulse not perceptible.. Ordered Camphor, mercurial frictions, Camphor. Julap to allay vomiting. Was put under Hospital treatment until the 29th, when Typhoid symptoms came on, with loss of appetite and general debility. Was under medical treatment till August 4th, and died after an illness of IT days. , The number of hours which the Patients died after admission. 89 died within 12 hours and 96 after that time. Was attacked with purging and cramps m the night ; purging and cramps continue ; prostration of strength, skin moist and below the natural temperature ; hands corrugated ; pulse small and feeble ; countenance good ; tongue covered with yellow fur. Ordered dry frictions, and afterwards rubbed with a liniment composed of Camphor, Sweet Oil, Oil of Peppermint, and ammonia. Was put under medical treatment, until 6 o'clock P. M. and died after an illness of 4 hours. Number dead since the commencement 7th July, to September 4th, 185 do cured - - do 227 Number received into the Rivington street Hospital - - - - 412 9 T. B. aged 40, bom in England ; temperate drinker. This man walked into the Hospital on the 25th of August, 10 o 'clock P. M. and requested lodgings for the night, as he felt bad. In half an hour he was observed to rub his bowels and shortly after was attacked with cholera symptoms ; cramps came on, and his extremities became cold ; countenance and eyes sunken, puke scarcely perceptible, Frictions with hot vinegar and cayenne pepper to the extremities and abdomen ; and Sinapisms to the Epigastro. 1 1 o'clock, seems better and perspiring. 26th 1 o'clock, every symptom ofcolapse fully developed : pulse gone. Every thing was done that was necessary ; and he died on 26th 10 o'clock P. M. after an illness of 12 hours. 10 M. H. aged 28. Born in Boston, Housekeeper, temperate; Admitted on 15th July, in the commencement of the stage of Collapse, and discharged cured on the 21st July. Readmitted on the 27th with Relapse and discharged cured on the 28th inst. Admitted the 3d time A. 5 P. M. August 3d. Was taken with cramps and vomiting. Has had retention of urine since her admission. 6 o'clock P. M. warm fomentations over the Bladder ; was under medical treatment until the Bth August, and discharged cured the third time. 11 James W . . . . n, who was found in an out house, lying on the ground in a drunken fit, beating his head till it was disfigured, as represented in the plate. Was brought to the Hospital in the morning, and died in the course of two hours, without having spoken since his being found. M. G. aged 30, born in Ireland, came from Montreal, to escape the pestilence there, and was in this city only 2 days before she was taken ill. Was brought to this Hospital and died in the course of 5 hours in the most excrutiating pain from the cramps. P. S. aged 33, intemperate negro. Admitted 4th of August 8 o'clock P. M. Was attacked with diarrhoea and vomiting, 2 days ago. When brought in was cold at the surface ; pulseless ; hands shriveled ; eyes sunken. He underwent medical treatment until 6 o'clock A.
