Take Succotrine Aloes and Cream of Tartar each one ounce, Jallap 2 drachms, [cross out] Cloves powder’d one drachm: to this add a sufficient quantity of syrup of Buck thorn. N:B: you may add to this dose an ounce of Castile Soap: - Mr: Saunders No, 2. A Drench for a Cow Two ounces of Anniseed, one ounce of Correander seed, one ounce of sweet fennel seed, one ounce of Carraway seeds, one ounce of Liquorish powder, and one ounce of Diapente- N:B: The above seeds are to boil in three pints of strong Ale, and half a pound of Treacle, when boiled well, let it stand to cool, and when ‘tis cold mix the above powders in a little ale, and put it in with the others; then warm it and give it the beast: Mrs. Burden No: 3 For the Cholic in Horse or Bullock: One quart of new milk, one pint of Beaten Hempseed, boil them together ten or twelve minutes, then strain them through a Cloth and give it the Animal- Allport N:4 For a Fever in an Horse Take 2 Ounces of Cream of Tartar in half a pint of white wine, and give it the Horse. Allport No 5 A Cooling Ointment One Handful of green Camomile, one ditto of ground elder, 1 ditto of House leek, and as much of the plaintain Leaf as the three above, got dry whiped clean and Chopt small, then clarifie one pound of unworked butter in a clean brass kettle, then add the Herbs, and let them stand till the next day, then put them on the Fire again, and let them simmer till you find the herbs crisp, then strain it through a fine cloth, and keep it close stopt down for use in a jar [cross out] N:B: the herbs are better bruised than chopt for all ointments- Allport N: 6 x For a Strain in Man or Beast. Ten ounces of Hogs Lard clarified, two ounces of oil of Turpentine, 1 ounce of the oil of St: Johns wort, half an ounce of Oil of Vitriol, stir them together till cold, and stop it up Close. - Allport No. 7 To make Ointments They are to made in a pot, the Herbs to be beat in a Mortar, to 2 handfuls of bruised herbs a pound of fresh Butter, or Hogs lard, and to every pound of Ointment, two ounces of Turpentine, and two ounces of Bees-wax – Allport No 8 To kill Maggots in Sheep. Take half [crossed out] ounce of Corrosive sublimate finely powdered, spring water two quarts, Spirits of Turpentine one gill, shake it two or three times a Day for use, drop the water round the maggots then rub them well together with a flat stick and it will immediately destroy them – Saunders No 9 Balls for an Horse one Ounce of Balsam of sulphur 2 ounces of Liquorish powder 2 ditto of Diapente 2 ditto of Horse powder 3 penny worth of oil of anniseeds 3 ditto of oil of Roses, 3 ditto of syrup of garlick 3 ditto of essence of Lemon, put all these [cross out] together in a Bladder – Dr: Cooper No: 10 For a Cow that cant clean Take a large Handful of Southern-wooden, boiled in three pints of Ale, then add one pound of Treacle, let it just boil, and then put in it on Half-penny worth of flowers of Brimstone, strain it and then give it warm to the Cow. No: 11 For a Calf that scoureth while sucking Take a pint of Vinegar and an Handful of Pipe-clay well burnt and powdered very fine, then put to it a little powdered Charcoal mix them together and give it to the Calf No 12. To keep the Flies from Turnips steep the seed for six hours in Train Oil, then strain it in a fine sieve and sow it immediately No 13. Eye Water Take 4 drachms of spirits of Wine, 30 drops of Goularde, 8 ounces of Rose water, mix these Ingredients well and apply it to your Eyes often with a soft Rag Mrs: Patch No 14. Balls for a Cold in an Horse Take the powder of Fenugreek, anniseeds, Cumin seeds, Elecampane, Coltsfoot, and flower of sulphur, of each three ounces, Juice of Liquorish one ounce, oil of Cloves and Honey each eight ounces, Genoa Treacle twelve ounces, [cross out] oil of Anniseeds one oz, mix these altogether with wheat Flowers to make it into Paste, and give a Ball as big as a Wall-nut at a time when necessary No 15 Pissing balls for an Horse. Salt Petre 4 ounces and an Half, Salt Prunella, salt Tartar, Castile Soap and Liquorish powder each 3 ounces. Manna and bitter Apple each two ounces and a half, 1 ounce of yellow Rosin, make [cross out] it into Balls and give one when wanted. Allport No 16 For a Swelling 4 Ounces of Marsh Mallows 4 Ounces of Pumpillion, 2 ounces of Camphorated spirits of Wine, mix these well together – approved- No 17 Physick for an Horse. Best [crossed out] Sucootrine, Aloes 1 ounce, Cream of Tartar 2 ozs and powder of Jallop 4 drachms Castile soap half an Ounce, make these into Balls with Syrrup of Buck thorn. (Give the Horse the night before the purge 1 drachm of Calomell: mixed with Diapente enough to make it into a Ball F Tucker No: 18 Green ointment. one pound of fresh lard, a quarter of a pound of Bees Wax, a quarter of tb of Venice turpentine, boil them very little, then stir in two ounces of Verdigrese keep stirring it till cold – No: 19 A Water to cure the Grease in Horses Two ounces of Roach allum burnt, 2 ozs of Vitriol, 2 ounces of white Coprose, to a quart of Spring Water – No: 20 To make a good ointment for Man or Beast. One pound of Hogs Lard, one oz of Vardigrese a little salt gammon, boil all these together it may be kept 20 years, fit [cross out] for any sores or dead flesh. No: 21 To keep an Horse Cool in his body. Take two thimble fulls of fennigreek, and one thimble full of Liver of Antimony at a time, and give [cross out] it in his Corn [cross out] once in 24 hours - N22 For a Sprain in a Horses shoulder. One ounce of oil of Turpentine, 2 ounces of Spirits of Wine camphorated, mix them and rub them in at twice, the first as soon as the horse has been bleeded, the other twelve hours after, heated well in with an Hot fire Shovel - Brachson No 23 Eye Water for an Horse Roach alum and white Vitriol each one oz Calcined, or burnt to a white Clax in a clean fire shovel: powder them and mix them with three pints of boiling Water: add to this one Ounce of Lapis Calaminaris powdered - N 24 x For an Horse that is Costive Give him a Clyster of Broth, with four oz.s of soap, and an Handful of Salt dissolved in it. No 25 To heal a Wound in a Horse from Portman Seymour Esq – There is nothing better to heal a Wound in a Horse, than Tallow and Turpentine mixed together No 26 Cordial Balls for a Horse Take Anniseeds, Cumminseeds, Fenugreek seeds Carthamus seeds, Grains of Paradise, Colts foot, Turmerick, Juniper Berries, in fine powder of each 2 ozs.; flour of sulphur, elecampane powder, of each 4 ozs.; Juice of Liquorice dissolved on the Fire in half a pint of white [crossed out] Wine or Ale six ounces; Chimical oil of Anniseeds, one Ounce; honey half a pound; Molasses as much as will make it into a paste No 27 To Cure a Bite, or Stroke in the Eye Take of Honey, ginger in a very subtile powder, and the Juice of Celandine, of each a like quantity; mix them well together, and put it into his Eyes with a feather twice a Day. To Cure a dry husky Cough, which will cause the Horse to cast out the filth and Corruption at his Nostril – No 28 Take a head of Garlic, and peel every Clove very Clean; then put them into a linen cloth, and boil them in a quart of Milk, ‘till the Garlic becomes tender; take it off, and strain it till you have squeezed the garlic hard, and the Juice out; set it a cooling, then add to it honey, Molasses of each half a pound, and give it blood warm. No 29 Balls for the worst of Colds in Horses Take a quarter of an oz of Cloves, one ounce of the flowers Rose mary powdered, white Tartar, seeds of Fenugreek, Diapente, Syrup of Colts foot, honey, of each two ozs. wheat flower as much as will make it into a paste; give one of them in a morning fasting, and ride him after it. No 30 The Thibe in a Bullock, and its Cure, First cut it with a Sharp knife, and then apply the following Medicine with fine tow to the wound; viz Take an oz of Verdigrease finely beaten and sifted; work this into a salve with two ounces of fine soap, and dress the kibe with it. No 31 an ointment for a Wound in Bullocks Take Hogs Lard finely rendered, 6 ozs. honey an oz & ½; bees wax and Rosin of each half an ounce; stir these over a Gentle fire together till they melt – No 32 x Ad promovendam Venerem Eam If you have any particular opportunity of a fine stallion, when your Mare is not disposed to receive him, give her a drink of clarified honey and new milk mixed together, and put some Nettles in tergum and then try her to the Horse - No: 33 x A Purge for a Horse just look, from Geass Aloes one ounce; Jallop 3 Drach: oil of Cloves 10 Drachms: made into a Ball with honey - No 34 For a Cold in an Horses Eyes. Into half a pint of Rose – water or Spring water, [cross out] add one Drachm of Tutty finely prepared; 1 Drachm of white sugar Candy powdered; and half a Drachm: of Sugar of Lead, with a feather put a Drop into each Eye, morning, and Evening, / If a film grows over the Eye, put a Scruple of White Vitriol, and a Scruple of Roach [cross out] Allum; both finely powdered, into half a quartern of spring water, and with a feather as I said above, it will cure it in 3 or 4 Days – No: 35. x A: Clyster for a Horse in a Fever Boil a spoonful of Oatmeal in 2 quarts of Water, together with two ounces of Senna, add half a pound of brown sugar, half a pint of sweet oil, and handful of Salt. give it blood Warm – No: 36: To Cure the grease, surfeits, loss} of Appetite, Cough; shortness of breath;} and to purify the blood, and to fatten tired} and wasted Horses - } [cross out] Give the Horse 2 Ozs. of Liver of antimony, which is Crocus Metallorum unwashed / in oaks and bran moistened, every morning for twenty Days successively – No: 37 For Inflamed Eyes Take half a pint of spring water, add to that, the Quantity of an Horse bean of white Copperas: and wash the Eyes with this water twice a Day; and it will be of great use No 38 To Cure a Blood Spavin Take up the Vein above and below the swelling, then open the Tumour in the middle: No 39 Lord orrery’s Rect: for a stranguary Take half an Ounce of Anniseeds beat fine in a marble Mortar; one handful of parsley roots, or instead of them half an oz of parsley seeds powdered; boil these in a quart of old strong beer; and when it is strained of, pull to it 1 Drachm. of fine Oystershel powder, and give it to your Horse warm - No 40 For pissing of Blood Take 3 pints of new milk, and boil in it, over a gentle fire, five ounces of Isinglass, which when it is dissolved, will so thicken the milk that it will look like Cream; then strain it through a sieve, to take out the dross of the Isinglass that will remain undissolved, and give it to your Horse milk warm in, the morning Fasting, and by giving it two or three times you will effect an entire Cure. No 41 To make Diapente Take the Roots of both Aristolochia’s, fine Myrh, bay berries, shavings of the harts horn, and the Roots of Gentian, of each 4 ozs. when they have been gently dried, make them into a fine powder, which must be kept in a Glass bottle, in a dry place No 42. A Cooling purge for an horse Cream of Tartar 4 ozs, Glober Salts 4 ozs. Powder of Jallop 3 dracs: dissolved in water gruel and given in a morning fasting - Brackin No 43, A drying Ointment for Greasy heeled horses. Honey 4 Ozs, white lead powdered 2 ozs. Verdigrease in fine powder 16z. mixt together Bartlett No 44. Diuretic Balls for an horse, Nitre 2 ozs into a Ball, 2 ozs, in one Ball, and to be given three or four mornings successively, or as you see occasion No 45,) An Alternative Purge – Aloes 1 oz. Gum Guaizcum half an oz. diaphoretic Antimony, and salt of Tartar each 2 [cross out] drachms make it into a Ball with any syrup – Give warm water and scald’d [cross out] bran and it will operate [cross out] by Urine the first day, the next by Stool but not much; ec Bartlet – No 46. Eye Water for an Horse Two 6 ozs. of white Rose water, two teaspoonfuls of Lapis Calimanaris two Ditto of Sugar of Lead Balls for a Bad Cold, or to increase Wind, No 47: Balsam of Sulphur 4 ozs, honey 4 oz: 3 pennyworth of the Syrup of garlic, 1 oz of the oil of Roses, 4 ozs. of Liquorish Powder, make Ingredients into Balls or Paste, and keep them in a pot, give as much at a time as the size of pullets Egg – Dr: Cooper No 48, x For a Sinew Sprain Vinegar 1 pint, 4 whites of Eggs and as much Bole Armoniac and bean flower as will bring it to a thick salve over the fire, then while it is hot lay it upon the place hurt – No 49, Lincolnshire Cordial Balls Take 1 oz of Elicampane, 1 oz of powder’d Fenugreek, 1 oz Sugar Candy, half an ounce of oil of Anniseed, 1 Ounce of Flower of Brimstone, half an oz of syrup of Cotts foots, Liquorish powder 1 oz, Anniseed 1 oz, Cumming seed 1 oz. N. 50, For Cracked Heels ½ of honey ½ oz Turpetine, ½ Oz Hogs lard 2 ozs. of powdered Allum, [cross out] heat the first articles [cross out] over the Fire, till they become a Poultice then sprinkle the Allum all over it, and apply it warm to the Horses heels over night, and take it of in the Morning - W: Taplin No 51. A Lotion for bad Heels Tincture of Myrh, and Camphorated Spirits of Wine each one ounce, White wine vinegar, and Spring Water, each 2 ozs – After which if you chuse it, you may anoint it with a little Camphorated Spermacitie Ointment - N 52, Diuretic Balls, from Mr: Taplin Surgeon Castile Soap 12 ozs. Yellow Rosin and Nitre (in powder) of each 8 ozs. Camphor in powder 16 grs Oil of Juniper 6 Drachms, mix these with as much Syrup, or honey as required, and divide it into a Dozen Balls, and roll it up in Liquorice or Anniseed powder – For a Bruise & Gall. Boil 2 ozs. of Bole Armoniac in a quart of Vinegar wash the bruise with Spring Water & them apply the above - No 53) Detergent Pectoral Balls. Castile soap, aniseed, and Liquorish powder each 5 ozs. Barbadoes Tar 6 ozs. Gum Ammoniacum three ozs – Balsam of Tolu one oz Honey to make a Mass - which divide into a Dozen Balls – Taplin Surg. No 54, Pectoral Cordial Ball Take Turkey figs, Spanish Liquorish, anniseed, and Liquorish Powders of each 4 ozs Carroway seeds, elecampane, and annisated Balsam of [cross out] each 2 ozs. Castile Soap according to the quantity of Pills you mean to make, cut it thin into some syrrup of Marsh Mallows, make it immediately into Pills double the Size of a Pea, and take two of them twice every day. relief [cross out] in 2 or 3 hours - Boyse No 67) For the swelling in Cattle by Clover - Take an Egg empty the shell and fill it with Tar, throw it in broken into the throat of the beast. No 68 Allport] For a Bad Cold with fever, &c &c bad Blood &c Take holk a pound of Nitre, 3 Ozs of Turmerick, 3 ozs of Anniseed, 3 ozs of Elicampane, 3 ozs of Sulphur, all of which [cross out] form into [cross outs] a Mass with Honey and heat it in common size Balls, and give one night, and morning Frank Allport J:4 No: 69. To preserve Lambs from Vermin – Take an Ointment made of Gunpowder, Brimstone, and common grease, and apply it behind the necks of Lambs; will be sure of having them preserv‘d from all kinds of Vermin NB: Taken from the Sun Newspaper - No. 70. For the Distemper in Dogs Take two parts of Nitre, and one of Antimony pound and mix them well - Conflagrate the whole by little and little in a Crucible, till it becomes a white powder - give as much as will be on a shilling or a dose in milk; it is best to bleed before you give the powder – No. 71) For the Mange in Dogs. Three ozs. of pewter, two ozs, of Quicksilver melted together till they incorporate, then beat them together till finely pulveriz’d - Give as much for a Dose as will lay on a sixpence, three days successively, they should not eat any meat for four hours, give it in butter, or fat - No. 72.) To make Rhubarb Wine One oz of Turkey Rhubarb slic'd, one oz of Seville Orange peel ½ oz of bruised Cardimums put these into a bottle of White wine, let it stand near the fire three days, then strain off, fire up the bottle again - No 73) x To cure the Bots in Horses Infuse rock Lime, about the size of an Egg in a quart of old Beer, and thoroughly dissolv’d, give it to the Horse at night, if one dose be not Sufficient you may repeat till a Cure is work’d, as it will not hurt - J: Clesland Esqr No 74) To destroy Rats Mix flour of malt with some butter, and a drop or two of oil of Anniseed, make it into Balls, and bait your trap, placing it where the Rats frequent mostly - To take them without a Trap, add to every 4 oz. a ¼ of an oz of Corrosive sublimate - No. 75) For the Tooth Ache. 1 Drachm of Camphor, 5 grains of Laudanum dissolv’d in two drachms of rectified spirits of Wine, then add to it ten drops of Oil of Cloves, dip a bit of Cotton into this mixture and apply it to the Tooth affected No. 76) For Old Beer 12 Bushes of Malt, and 12 ℔ of Hops to an Hogshead; to stand on the Mash two hours, and to boil one hour, but you must take care it be not work’d too hot No, 77) For Ale 8 Bushels of Malt, and or [illegible] ℔– of Hops to an Hogshead to stand 2 hours on the Mash and to boil 1 hour & ¼ be exact in the measure of water &c &c - No: 78) Rhubarb Wine – Turkey Rhubarb sliced, 1 oz – seville orange peel 1 oz – bruis’d Cardamums, half an oz – put these Ingredients into a Quart of strong White Wine, and let it stand near the fire, three days, then filter it off for use – N:B: You may fill the bottle again with wine. No: 79. For an Ague. One drachm of Bark, half a drachm of Venice Treacle, made into a Bolus, take it immediately after the hot fit, repeat it in twelve hours, and again in twelve hours after that, drink after each dose a glass of White Wine with the juice of half a Lemon repeat it in a Week once - N: 80.) For killing Rats – One quart of Oatmeal, 4 drops of oil of Rhodium 1 Grain of musk, 2 nuts of Nux Vomica, the whole to be made very fine and plac’d were the Rats frequent and continu’d - while they eat it - No: 81) To make surfeit Water – Three Gallons of English Brandy, 3 ℔s, of poppies, 2 ozs, of Angelica, cut). 2 ozs. Balin, 2 ozs of Mint, 1 oz and ½ of Mary gold flower fresh, 1 oz ½ of sweet Marjoram cut, a little Top of Wormwood, ½ ℔ of Raisins Ston’d, ½ ℔ of figs slic’d, 4 Ozs, of Dates slic’d, 4 Ozs of Liquorice slic’d, 6 pennyworth of saffron, ½ oz of Nutmegs bruis’d, ¼ oz of large Mace – sweet fennel seed, Coriander seed, Anniseed, Carraway seed, fennel seed, and ginger, of eache ½ oz, let them all stand in fusing in the Sun a month, in a pot or glass, then strain it off, - NB: The White is made by putting a proper quantity of Brandy on these ingredients, and then distilling it after the Red is pour’d off - No: 82.) Arsenic powdered 2 pennyworth, boil the whole in 3 Gallons of Soapers Lye for some time, wash the sheep where ever any breaking out may appear - approv’d 106) To Brown the Barrel of a Gun – mjr Spirits of Vitriol & oil, of each q:s: boil it – then with a feather, closed the Barrel (ad Libidum) whilst hot, when dry, Oil it with Sweet Oil, & rub it well with Flannel - 107) Remedy for Canine Madness Take 1 ℔ of Salt, put it into a Quart of Spring Water, & wash, Bathe, & Squeeze the wound for an Hour; then bind a little Salt upon the Wound, & keep it on for 13 hours - Be sure as soon as the wound is given to make use of the above remedy - Then take, the Roots of Flower de Luce 1. handful, bruise & stampt them small, put them into Milk, & give it the Dog. – opts: Or take 8 Drachms of the Juice of an Herb, call’d Hartshorn, or Dogs Tooth; 108.) For the Bite of a Viper in Dogs. Wash the part clean with hot Vinegar, or Urine, then shave the place where the wound was, or cut the Hair very close, then anoint it with the Oil of Vipers once a Day, for six or seven days, but Muzzle him, except when eating, & then take care that he does not lick the part affected - 109) For Internal Worms in Dogs. Mix 2 scruples of Saffron with the yolk of an Egg, mix this again in Oatmeal with some fat, & the Dog will eat it, if not you must ball him. - 110) To harden Dog’s Feet. Wash their feet with warm Alum water, having soaked them well before with warm Urine, so as to get out all the sand & dirt, - About an hour after, boil a small piece of Butter in some Beer, & anoint the foot with that. - 1.11) [crossed out] To cure the Formica or Sore Ears in Dogs. Take, gummi dragonthimum, or Gum Dragont &, 4 ozs _ infus’d in the strongest Vinegar for eight Days, and afterwards well bruis’d , if possible in a marble Mortar, adding Roche Allum, And Galls beaten to Powder of each 2 Ozs; mix all these well together, & apply it to the part affected. - No. 112) For a Bruise, or a sprain, in Dogs my own. Cut the Hair close off, & then anoint the part affected with the following Mixture, Viz – 2 Ozs. of Oil of Spike, & 2 ozs. of Oil of Swallow), & 1 Oz of Oil of Turpentine, as after apply it, as Convenience will allow - No. 113) For all fresh wounds in Dogs – Apply immediately Oil of Turpentine, but secure the Dog’s Mouth that he does not bite you; Cut off the Hair as soon as possible from the Wound, as the Hair often impedes a Cure, [crossed out] wish’d for speedily – No. 1.14) For a Film growing over Dog’s Eyes Take the quantity of a large Pea of White Violet & put it into about half a pint of spring water & when it has stood a Day, take a fine piece of Linnen Cloth, & dip it in the Liquor, squeeze it a little, & then pass it over the Dogs Eyes gently six or seven times; and after about a Minute has elapsed, with a plain Cloth or Rag in clean water wash his Eyes again, & dry them - If you percieve the Dg’s Eyes Smart do it twice a Day – 115) For a Film in a Horses Eye – Put a Scruple of White Vitriol, ditto of Roach Allum, each finely powdered, in a half a Quartern of Spring Water, & with a feather let fall a Drop into each Eye Night & Morning It will prove Efficacious, in three Days – 116) A Bait for Rats – Fill a Phial with an oz of Oil of Carraways ½ oz of oil of Rhodium, Ditto Anniseed, add to which two Grains of Musk you may add Red Berrins Drops, when roasted or boiled - 117) For Stains in Leather Breeches - Allum powdered – 1 -drachm – Distill’d Vinegar – 1 – oz – Lemon Juice – 1. oz – 118) To Cure Hams – Hang up two hams for two or three days, Then 4 ozs. of Salt Petre, finely powder’d, 1 ℔ of Bay salt, 1 ℔ of coarse sugar, & 12 Cloves of Garlic, put all these into a Quart of Strong Beer, & boil it well - Rub your Hams first with a little salt Petre, & let them lie 12 hours the next morning rub your Pickle in by the fire. Continue rubbing & burning them every day, for a fortnight, during which time they must always be in the pickle. – Then hang them up in a Chimney, where wood is always burnt, for 2 months, when they will be in great perfection. After you take them down, they must be kept moderately dry – Remember to rub well every time you turn them in the pickle as it conduces greatly to their flavour. – L:W ney 119) ꝶ: To make Steel Wine – Take of Iron filings 4 ozs. To procure sleep – Do Fill a small bag about the size of a pincushion with Hops & lay it under your pillow; the Hops should be new, & chang’d every five Days – 126) For the Rheumatism. 15 drops of oil of Rosemary, dropt upon a little moist sugar, wash it down with a little Wine & Water, three nights, following – 127) – For a Quinsey – Do Bole ammoniac, honey, & flour, spread on a leather, & put round the throat - 128) Linseed Tea for a Cough. Do 1. Oz. of Linseed in a quart of spring Water, boil it slowly till reduc’d to a pint, then strain it, & add the Juice & thin peel of two lemons, and a quarter of a pound of brown sugar Candy pulveris’d, boil all together for a few Minutes, & drink it in small Quantities frequently either hot or cold - 129) Camphor Julip – Camphor 1 Drachm, double refin’d Sugar ½ oz. grind the Camphor with a little spirit, of Wine till it is soften’d, then with the Sugar till they are perfectly united, & [crossed out] lastly add by degrees a pint of boiling water, let it stand in a cover’d vessel till cold then strain it off through Paper – 130.) Eye Water – Mrs. W – H Pour 3 quarts of boiling Water on 1 oz of white Coperas, stir it till near cold, then add ½ oz of Camphor, stir it till quite cold, strain it off the next day – 131.) Tooth Powder Cream of Tart ¾ of oz Choice Myrh 3 Drachms – Dragon’s blood 1. Do - mix them into powd: 132) To make Friars Balsam. Take Gum benjamin 1. oz & ½, Strain’d storax 1. oz. Balsam of Tolu ½ oz. Succotrine Aloes ¼ oz. Rectified Spirits of Wine 1. pint Digest them together till the Gums are dissolv’d as much as possible, then strain off the tincture for use. - 133) Ointment of Marsh Mallows Half a pound of Marsh Mallows Roots; of Linseed, & fenugreek seeds, of 3. ozs. bruise them & boil them half an hour gently in a quart of Water; then add two quarts of sweet Oil, & boil them together, till the Water is quite washed away; then strain off the Oil, & add to it a pound of Bees Wax, half a pound of yellow rosin, & two ozs. of common turpentine; melt them together over a slow fire, & keep them continually stirring till the ointment is cold. – 134) Yellow Basilicon. Sweet Oil ¼ of a pint, Bees Wax, yellow rosin, & Burgundy pitch of each a quarter of a Pound; Venice turpentine ¾ of oz. mix them together over a slow fire - 135) An excellent Bitter Tincture Gentian root, & dried orange peel, each 2. ozs – Cochineal bruis’d, ½ Drachm; infuse them into a quart of Good Brandy for three or four Days, then strain off the Liquor for use. – This will aid digestion, & create Appetite. 136) Volatile tincture of guaicum. Gum Guaicum 1. Oz. in gross powder, steep it for a week or ten days in six ozs. of sal Volatile drops, in a Bottle close stopp’d. - 137) Spermaceti Ointment. Best Sallad Oil ¼ of a Pint White Wax ¼. ℔ Spermaceti ½ oz. Melt these together over a gentle fire, keeping it stirr’d till quite cold - 138) Diachilon with the Gums Three quarters of a pound of white Diachilon, 2 ozs. of strain’d Galbanum, turpentine and frankincense of each ¾s: of an oz: melt them together over a slow fire – 139) A Strengthening Plaister – White diachilon ½ ℔ frankincense 2 ozs. Dragons blood ¾s: of an oz; melt the Diachilon over a slow fire, & then add the other ingredients finely powder’d & mix them well together by stirring them continually till the plaister is quite cold. 140) Camphorated Spirits of Wine – Dissolve 1 Oz of Camphor in a pint of rectified Spirits of Wine – 141.) Lime Water. Pour a Gallon of boiling water on a pound of unslak’d lime; stir them well together, & let the water remain on the lime for 24 hours, then strain off the clear liquor for use – 142) Public Advertizer October 24th. 1787 Cure for a Cancer, by the use of Cliver, alias, Goose Grass – The method to be observ’d, to abstain from salt Meats, & use only thin Diet, & twice a Day between meals drink ¼ of a pint of the juice of Cliver, which is prepar’d by pounding & squeezing them at the same time using the Juice boil’d & mix’d with Hog’s Lard so as to make a very soft green ointment, & constantly apply it to this wound, laying the bruis’d Cliver over it, refreshing it as often as it dries, taking particular care to keep this wound clean, this was practis’d for six months, & a very bad Cancer heal’d; should be taken every Spring to prevent a return – ꝶ Recipe for making the Ointment - To a pound of fresh Liquor & Hog’s Lard fin’d without salt, put as much Cliver as the Lard will moisten, & boil it over a slow fire, often strain it thro’ a Cloth, & when cold take the ointment off from – the water that will remain at the bottom - Physick ought to be taken, & the Juice drank at least a week before the Ointment is us’d. The Patient should take a mercurial dose or two previous to drinking the Juice - the Person was not cur’d, but better in six Months, & cur’d in three after – 143) For a Cough in Horse, early perciev’d Two table spoonfuls of Spirit or Salt of Hartshorn in warm Ale, sweeten’d with syrup of Poppies, a quart or three pints of Beer is sufficient – 144) Pectoral Infusion, for a Cold in Horses. Raisons ston’d half a pound, Liquorice root split, or bruis’d 3 ozs white Hore hound 3 ozs infuse in 4 or 5 quarts of water boiling, & let the whole stand cover’d up two, or three Hours, strain it off without pressing, for use – 145) “Balls, worth Attention” – Antimony in powder 8 ozs. brimstone powder’d 4 ozs Gum Ammoniacum, pounded Garlic, Soap each 4 ozs Venice turpentine 3 oz - Anniseeds, Bay Berries, & Linseed in powder 2 ozs. each, form the paste with Honey of Oxymel of Squils; Give a Ball daily for a Month, omit Do & repeat again, being cautious not to give too much hay – 146) A mixture for a bruis’d back by the saddle, or any kind of bruise, or wring - / Bamfylde Extract of Saturn ½ oz – Camphorated Spirits of Wine 2 oz – Soft Water ½ Pint 147) To clean Boot Tops – Cochineal pulveris’d – 12 12 grains Gum Arabic 1 oz Oil of Vitriol ¾ oz. Spirits of Lavender ½ oz White of three Eggs Milk noum: ½ Pint [cross out] Mix the Vitriol & Lavender together in half a Tea Cup of Spring Water warm; let it stand till it is cold; beat the Eggs well up & add them to the Milk with the Gum Arabic, & Cochineal, then shake the whole well together 148) ꝶ For greazy Heals J. Torr’s White Vitriol 2. ozs. Burnt Allum 2. ozs Ægyptiacum 1. oz Goulard 20 drops Camphor ½ oz. form these into a Lotion & anoint the part affected twice a day, first washing it clean, with Black Soap & warm water _ N:B: You may when thoroughly dry anoint the part with a little Elder Ointment. 149 ꝶ A Paste for Horse Balls. Dr: Quinsey. Powder of Fenugreek, Anniseeds, Cummin seeds, carthamus, elicampane, Colts foot, flower of Sulphur, of each 3. ozs. Juice of Liquorice 1 oz; oil of [cross out] olives, & Honey, each 8 oz. Genoa Treacle, 12 ozs. oil of anniseed 1 oz - mix all together, & with one pound & half of Wheat Meal, or as much as is sufficient, make it into a paste, which roll into balls, about as Big as common wash Balls – dissolve one Ball in new worm wort; & give to a Horse daily, for ten, or fifteen days; or as long as there appears occasion – 150 ꝶ For the Cholic in Horses. H: H: Diapente 1. oz Diacordium ½. oz Myrh. Pulvis. 2. Drachms Oil of Amber (unrectifi’d) 2. Do - form the Ball with Liquorice Powder administer it, as soon as possible, & repeat it, in four hours after 151. ꝶ For the Scratches H:H: First wash the parts very clean with black Soap – then rub on the following ointment, “ Honey 4. ozs. Red Lead, Pulv: - 2. ozs. Verdigrease, Pulv: 1. oz. Mix them together & apply as much as in sufficient upon some tow [cross out], to the part, & renew it once in 3 days - 152 ꝶ Composition for a Sprain. H:H: - Little Devil. - Linseed Oil,} oil of Ecreter,} of each 1. oz Oil of Swallows,} Oil of Turpentine,} Oil of Spike 2. ozs. Oil of Petre 6 Drachms. Oil of Vitriol 2 Drachms & ½. Sal Volatile 1. oz. Mix these Ingredients well together & keep it close cork’d up for use; & when us’d let it be well rub’d in with the Hand - 153 ꝶ For a Cut or Bruise. Pint Treacle - ¼ ℔: Boil the whole together for five minutes. ꝶ Vyvy 157 /ꝶ To cover the Roofs of Houses from the Royal Society of Sweden “Boil a Quantity of Tar in a Kettle, & mix with it Charcoal finely powder’d, till it is the thickness of Mortar; spread this with a trowel about the thickness of an Inch over the Roof; it will soon grow hard, & resist all kinds of Weather. - Roofs, thus cover’d have stood in Sweden more than a Century, without wanting repair - 158 ꝶ. To make Orange Wine. Take 30. ℔s of Good Brown Sugar, the whites of seven Eggs, & the Shells well beat up - boil it in water - skim it as the Scum rises, till it is quite clear = When cold add the Juice of half an Hundred Seville Oranges, & half of the Peels, to fill a Ten Gallon Cask; Put in a Bit of Toasted Bread, with a small Quantity of Yeast, & when done working put in half a pint of Brandy; then cork it up, & it will be fit for use in six months, but better, at 12 months.- 159 ꝶ. Green Ointment. Mr: Plaise. Rue, & red Sage, each 1. ℔ Young tops of Bay,} Worm Wood} Rosemary} each ½ ℔: Camomile} Mutton Suet pick'd clean from the Skin, chop the Herbs well together, & small, then beat the Suet & the herbs together in a Stone Mortar, till it is thoroughly incorporated, then put to it two Quarts of the best oil, put it all into an earthen [cross out] pot, & stir it well together, cover it very well with a Bladder, & put an Helling Stone over it, then bury it in the Earth ten days, after which put it into a clean brass pan, & let it boil over a soft Fire 2 Hours, then put to it 2 ozs. of Oil of Spike, & boil it One Hour more, then strain it through a Cloth: - it should be made in May, or June. 160 ꝶ Pills for the Rheumatism – James’s Powder 20. Grains Gum – Guaicum 20. Do. Pilla Rusi 20. Do. form into Pills of equal Size; two to be taken every night- 161.) Potatoe Pudding. Half a pound of Potatoes well boil’d, & pounded, Half a pound of butter melted thin, 5 Eggs leaving out 3 Whites. One Glass of White Wine, & Brandy mixt, equal Quantity, Sugar to your Taste, and a little graded Nutmeg, put a thin paste all over your dish, & bake it one Hour – 162.) Mushrooms, pickled Brown. Clean your mushrooms with flannel dipt in Water, but the mushrooms must not be put into the water; lay them in an earthen pan, & sprinkle Salt between each layer, let them stand 12 Hours, then stew them in their own Liquor, till they are quite dry; put Black Pepper, Cloves, Mace, & Ginger, pour on them as much good Vinegar, as will cover them for a Pickle, & Oil them a little; let them stand to be cold before they are put into Jars, or Glasses. - Keep them close stopt. 163.) Take 2 Doz. of Herrings, wash them clean, take off their Heads, & Fins, & put to them a ¼ oz. of Cloves, ¼ oz of Mace, & a little All-spice, & some pepper, one nutmeg, a little Salt; then cover them with Vinegar, & ½ pint of Port Wine; bake them four Hours- 164) Oyster Catchup One Hundred Oysters, pour the Liquor from them, bruise them very small with your hand, then throw over them an Handful of Salt, let them stand 3 or 4 hours, then boil them, scumming them very clean, strain them through a Sieve, then take the Liquor that comes from them, first, & put with them over the Fire – To every quart of Liquor put a Drachm of Mace, Do. Cloves, pepper, & grated Nutmeg; 2 or 3 spoonsful of Vinegar, or a quarter of a Pint of White Wine, a little Salt, boil the Whole ¼ of Hour – 165) Oxford Sausage Meat. Take one pound of the lean part of a Leg of Veal, one pound of Pork, one pound of Beef Suet, a little brown Sage, chop them all together, very fine, cannot be too fine, add 5 Eggs, with some pepper & Salt to your taste, mix them well together, & they will be fit for use - It is better to put the Eggs as you use it, as it may otherwise otherwise grow Sour … 166) For a Cough or Shortness of Breath. Take 2 ozs. of Honey, 1. oz of Sweet Oil, 2 ozs. of white Sugar of Candy pounded, 4 ozs. of the best Raisons of the Sun, ston’d, & pounded, one Glass of Rum, two teaspoonsfull of flower of Brimstone, one pennyworth of Liquorice powder, mix all together, take two or three tea Spoonsfull of it every Day, or when the Cough is most troublesome. – 167) Cherry Brandy. [crossed out] Take 12 pounds of Cherries, with the stalks pull’d off, put them into a Stone Mortar; & pound them, then put them into a Preserving pan with three pounds of Lump Sugar, then boil it up, [crossed out] let it stand till cold, then put it into a stone Jar, & add six quarts of Brandy, shake it once a Day for 3 weeks, & then filter it off for use; corking it well. - 168) To clean Carpets Half a pint of Bullock's Gall put into a large pan of Root Water, wet a flannel & rub it over the Carpet as for as you can reach, then take a piece of Soap, & rub over the part that is wetted, then have a Pan of clean water & wash off the Soap very clean with another flannel, then rub it dry with a Linnen Cloth- [crossed out] 169) To dye Orange Colour. One oz of Arnotta, 3 ozs of Pearl Ashes, boil’d in 2 Gallons of soft Water till dissolved, strain it through a sieve, boil your linnen or [cross out] Cotton about ten Minutes, then put it into cold Spring Water, wherein some Allum has been dissolved 170.: To Dye Yellow. X Mrs Southern One oz. of Turmerick put into three pints of skim’d Milk, let it boil a few minutes, strain it through a fine Sieve, or Cloth, dip in what you wish to dye, have ready some Allum Water to rense it in, as soon as you take it out of the Dye; You must neither dry it near the fire, nor in the Sun. – 171.) For Fish Pickle. Take Walnuts when fit to pickle, pound them & squeeze them thro’ a coarse Cloth, let the liquor stand a Day or two, to settle, then pour off the Clear; & to every pint of Liquor put a pound of Anchovies 1/8 oz of Mace 1/8 of Cloves, 1/8 Jamaica Pepper; boil them together till the Anchovies are dissolved, strain it off, to every Quart of Liquor, put half a pint of Vinegar, 16 Shallots, 2 Cloves of Garlic, boil it up again, till the Shallots are tender, let it get cold, then bottle it tight. 172. ꝶ J: Torr’s own Physic for Hunters. Succotrine Aloes (pulveriz’d) 10 Drachms, or less according to the subject Jalop - 1. oz {alias ½. oz Glober Salts - ½ oz. {alias 1. oz Castile Soap - 1 oz Ginger, in powder. 1. Tea spoonfull Salad oil - 1. Table Do. Oil of Cloves -20 Drops form into a Ball with Syrup of Buck thorn q.s. 173. ꝶ Lobster Sauce – to keep 3 Years. ½ oz of Mace ½ of Cloves one midling siz’d Nutmeg, 20 Anchovies, (all pounded as fine as possible, first separately & then together) a large handful of Suet, & a Teaspoonful of Xian Pepper_ Mix all these Ingredients in a marble Mortar with a Quart of Sherry, then pick the Fish out of the tails, Claws, &c of four large, or five small Pea Lobsters, bruise them gently with [cross out] some of the mixture & put them into the Liquor - put it into wide mouth’d, Bottles, or small stone Jars – pitch the Corks well – Stir the Bottle, or Jar, before you take out the Sauce – Two table spoonsful, will be sufficient for a Sauce Boat, - Add a little Lemon Juice before serving, it up Major L – gr- nd 174) ꝶ. To make Ginger Wine . – To ten Gallons of Water, put twelve Pounds & ½ of loaf Sugar, the Whites of eight Eggs well beat, stir them well together, & set them on the fire, & when near boiling skin it very well, then take half a Pound of White Ginger, just bruise it, & put it into the Liquor whilst boiling, let it boil 20 Minutes; then pare the rind of ten Lemons very fine ready against the Liquor is boil’d then pour it boiling hot on them; when it is cool put it into the Cask, with two Spoonsfull of good Barm, the Lemons must have the inner Coats peel’d off, & afterwards Slic’d & every Pip taken out, the slices to be put into the Cask, with ½ oz. of Isinglass. You must not stir, but close it up the next Day, it will [cross out] be fit to bottle in a fortnight or three weeks- 175) ꝶ To make Dutch Fish Sauce. Take the Yolks of 2 Eggs ¼ ℔: of Butter, 2 table spoonsful of Water, & one of Vinegar, put it into a Stew Pan & stir it till it boils - 176) ꝶ. To attract Fox, Hare, or Rabbit – Oil of Rhodium – 9 drops Do. of Parsley – 24 Drops Do. of Thyme – 7 Drops Do. of Carraways – 12 Drops with the dropping of a Red Herring. 177) ꝶ. For drawing of Rats & Mice. Oil of Rhodium - 10 Drops Oil of Carraways - 6 Drops Oil of Earth Worm - two pennyworth Oil of Thyme - one pennyworth Oil of Swallows - one pennyworth Oil of Cloves - One Drachm Musk half a Grain - Mix the whole together in a Bottle keeping it well cork’d - “Drawing only” - 178) ꝶ For killing Rats, & Mice. Take half a pint of Oatmeal One Ounce of [crossed out] Sublimate 2 Ozs. of Hogg’s Lard - Make it into a stiff Paste adding 40 Drops of the drawing Oils mixt as above, & work’d into it- When you lay this put some Water near; “the Whole should be lain under lock.” ꝶ. 179.) For the Yellows, in Horses. First bleed your Horses, taking off 2 Quarts, Then take Salt Petre, Juniper Berries, turmeric, of each 2 ozs: Madder, Castile soap of each 1. oz Succotrine Aloes ½ oz Saffron 1 Drachm, pulverize the hard things, & cut the soap in small pieces, mix these Ingredients with 3 Gills of warm ale, & a large Spoonful of Sugar. - Give four of these Drinks, every other Day One; omitting the aloes in the three last- Meshes & Warm Water, thrice a Day. - 180. ꝶ To make Irish Usquebaugh- Rœsa Sola, 1. ℔. Brown Sugar Candy 8. ozs Liquorice root 4: ozs. Cinamon 3: ozs. Mace ½: oz Nutmegs ½: oz: Cloves & Cochineal of each ¼: oz: Anniseeds 4: ozs. best saffron 1. oz: 5 Grains: The rind of One Large Seville Orange, & the same of a Lemon. - Six quarts of the best french Brandy - Slice the Liquorice & bruise the other Ingredients; & Infuse the whole for a fortnight or three weeks - Shaking the Bottle once or twice a Day, then strain & filtre it off for use, put it into strong Bottles, & Cork them well, (or wire) with two or three Leaves of Gold in each Bottle - 181.) ꝶ: To make Good Ink – Best blew Galls One pound, bruis’d in a Mortar, Gum arabic ½ ℔: Green Coperas 3: ozs: 1 Spoonful of Dyers Indigo – These Ingredients put into an earthen [crossed out] Pitcher, with a Gallon of Water (soft running water) blood warm, let it stand in the Chimney’s corner 9 days, stir it twice a Day, then strain it off for use - Probatum este B 182.) ꝶ: To make Tint. One Pound of Virgin Honey Melted, & well scimm’d – mix’d with a Gallon of Port – the same proportion will do for any Quantity – 183.) ꝶ: Mixture Two ozs: of Double refin’d Sugar, melted, put into a quart of Water, till well mix’d, may be added to [crossed out] the same quantity of Spirit without Impoverishing it- 184.) ꝶ: To make Red Ink. Powder of Brazil 1. oz: White Lead & Allum of each 2 Drachms, Gum arabick 1 Drachm- put these into a pint of Urine- stop it close in a Bottle, frequently shaking it. If tawney put a ¼ ℔: of Chips of Log Wood, if it wants a Body, put 1 Gallon of Brandy – 197) ꝶ: To fine a Hogs Head of any Wine – Take 2 ozs. of Ising Glass steep’d 24 Hours, till it becomes a Jelly, beat it up with 2 Quarts of the same Wine, then strain it - & put it into the Cask stirring the same - If too high colour’d put 2 Quarts of Scummed Milk, if it want a Face add 2 ozs of Melted Loaf sugar, if a Body, One Gallon of Brandy 198) ꝶ: For the Stone and Gravel. Take Black Berries, before they are quite ripe, just when turn’d; pick them clean from their stems, & put them into an earthen pot; tie them up close, & put them into a Kettle of Water; let them stand over a fire till they are reduc’d to a Pulp; then strain them, & to a pint of Juice add a pound of powder’d Sugar, boil it to a Jelly, & put it up for use - N:B: A gentleman, who for many years was afflicted with this terrible Complaint, was persuaded to take every Night going to Bed, the Quantity of a large Nutmeg of this pleasant Medicine; the Effect of which was, that the Stone was broken in pieces, & voided in Granules, some of them nearly of the size of [crossed out] pepper Corns, manifestly appearing to be proportions of a much larger substances. - This Gentleman, though more than Old Years of Age, is now enabled to discharge these stony particles without much difficulty, & finds no other Inconvenience, than a frequent Irritation to make water - 199) ꝶ: An Extraordinary Cure of the Gout An English Merchant in Turkey, being there on a Journey, with Gout upon him, it provok’d him to return some Insults he had reciev’d from a Turkish officer at Baba so effectually, as to draw upon him the punishment of an Hundred & fifty Bastinadoes on the Soles of his feet; which, however painful a one it was, prov’d so effectually a Cure of his Distemper, that it never return’d again; & made him so sensible of his high Obligation to the Prescriber of it, that he every Day afterwards drank the Health of his Turkish Doctor – 200) ꝶ: An absolute Cure for Rheumatism – Take the pickle of Barrel’d Herrings, & rub all over the parts afflicted, before a Good Fire; wrap up in flannel; 5 or 6 Applications generally compleat the Cure, in the worst of Cases- 201) ꝶ: Gout’s Preventative Best Rhubarb, in powder, one Scruple, of Calcen’d Borax 1 Scruple; of purified Salt of Ammoniac, [cross out] ½ Scruple; Oil of Cinnamon one Drop; Mix them together: - To be taken every morning (for 6 weeks in the Spring) & the like in the fall of the Year - 202. After the Contents of the pot have boil’d sufficiently, take it from the fire, & let it stand 24 Hours in a cool place; then uncover the pot, & with a feather smear the frames of the Windows & doors, both of Apartments & Stables, from which you are desirous of keeping Flies Mulberry Syrup - Put them in a Stew Pan over a slow fire, and when boil’d to a Pulp, then strain it thro’ a Jelly bag and to a Pint of Syrup put a pound of powdered Sugar & boil together; when cold bottle for use. - 219.) For 9 Gallons take half a Bushel of Currants & One Gallon of Rasberries, put them in a little Water, stalks & all, squeez them well with your Hands, to get out all the Juice, add as much water as will fill your Cask, allowing one Gallon for waste; then strain the Wine, & mix it well, with 28th of good coarse Sugar, let it stand, till the next Day, then skim off the Top, & put it into your Cask, when it has done hissing, put into a quart of good Brandy, & stop it up very close, but be cautious that it has done hissing before you stop it; it may perhaps hiss for 2 Months or longer; - White Currants make the lightest colour’d wine; Some put half red & half White - 224) Milk Punch - Ms Greening Steep the rinds of 24 Lemons in a quart of Rum, then add 2 quarts of boiling water 2 ℔ & ½ of loaf Sugar, two nutmegs grated, & three quarts more of Rum, with One pint of Lemon Juice, mix the ingredients well together, & add two quarts of Boiling milk - let it stand two or three Hours, & strain it through a flannel Bag - N:B:) Most people prefer Brandy to Rum 225.) - Tincture of Rhubarb - Rhubarb 1 oz. London turpentine & Antimony equal Quantities; make into Balls, give two every morning, the size of an Egg – Revd: Mr. Churchward’s Paint reciept White lead 1: ℔ Black Paint 1 ℔ Pint of boil’d oil Three ozs of Sugar of Lead, finely powder’d – For the Rheumatism – 20 Grs. - James’s Powder 20 Grs. – Gum Guaicum 20 Grs. – Pilla Russ Misce, bene Irendo, in II Pill: divid – Dua sumendæ nocturne, per sex noctes. ꝶ Mock Turtle - Take 4 Calves feet, with the [crossed out] horny part on, nicely wash’d, & clean’d; by scalding with boiling Water & Rosin like the Head; as the feet are the best part to cut up, in large Pieces, to go to the Table, the remaining part of the feet [crossed out] nearly dissolve away – Put the feet in a Stew Pan with some water, stew them well in an Hour & an half, or till tender; Also the thick part of the Ears, the thin part of the Ears will take rather longer stewing before they are tender; Take care to skin them well, that they may look delicately white; Cut them in longish but narrow strips; If you send any of the inward Jelly part of the feet, in the Turtle Soup, the Ears & the feet will require as much stewing one as the other. - The Sauce - 2 ℔s of Gravy Beef, or the [cross out] nuckle of Veal with 3, or 4 ℔s, of Meat to it, & sufficient Meat to make some force meat Balls, by chopping it very small & rolling it into small siz’d Balls, half the size of a Pigeons Egg, season’d with salt, Pepper black, & Cayenne; 2, or 3, small onions nicely peel’d & squeez’d, thro’ a Hair Sieve, one Carrot Do, a small bunch of sweet herbs, or a little Sage, a few Cloves, a little Mace, & some Pepper White; Stew it all together with 2. qrts. of Water; Scum it well, & Strain it off, then put in the Ears, & the parts of the feet that are sufficiently tender; then add a little Water to the part not quite tender, & let it stew again, when you can add it to the Soup the second day – Boil two or three Eggs hard, divide the Yolks into 4, & roll them in some of the first of the Strongest of the Broth, but don’t put in the Eggs, nor Lemon Juice till in the Tureen, going to Table, as if you put the Lemon Juice to the whole, it may not keep so long, owing to the Acid Mixture – the whole when cold will form a Jelly - Mr. Joshin. - Ms. Ley’s Ointment - Take 4: ℔s of Butter from the Churn, without being wash’d, or salted; six ozs. of Sun Raisons, ston’d, put in whilst boiling Hot, let it stand till cold, [crossed out] then put it on the fire, & let it boil gently a quarter of an Hour, then take 6 ozs. of loaf Sugar, mix’d with ½ a Quart of a pint of orange flower water, shake it well together, then put the whole on the fire, & when it begins to boil, take it off & Scum it well, then add 1 ℔ & ½ of Bees Wax slic’d, replace it on the fire, till all is melted & let it boil, scum it well again, pour it into tea Cups, or Pomadum Pots, from whence if you chuse you may remove them, & wrap them up in White Writing Paper for Use - ꝶ: Cowslip Wine – Mrs. Booth To every Gallon of Water put ¾ of ℔ of lump Sugar, boil it ¾s of an Hour, add to it the Whites of 3 Eggs, Scum it well, when near cold put to every Gallon, as much Brandy as you may imagine requisite for the Time you intend it to keep – ꝶ: To take rust out of Steel Cover the Steel, with sweet oil, well rub’d on it, then in 48 Hours, use unslack’d Lime finely powder’d, rub untill all the rust disappears – To take the Black from polish’d Grate Bars. With a Piece of Broad Cloth, after the Dirt is remov’d by a course rubber from the purpose, dip it into the following Mixture - 1 ℔ of Soft Soap boil’d softly in 2 qts of Water, till reduc’d to one, of the mixture take three or four Spoonsfuls, & mix with Emery of the finest quality to a consistence, rub well with this, & finish the polish by using Glass Paper instead of Sand Paper - - Sauce for Pork Steakes – A Glass of Sweet White Wine, little Cayenne Pepper, Half a rind of a Lemon cut thin, & put into it in the morning to steep all Day, then add the Juice, warm it with a little good Gravey & send it in a butter boat, or over the Steaks, as you like best - To keep Eggs - Put Unslack’d Lime in Water, make it the size of a thick pickle, cover the Eggs with the same. - Calf’s Head Turtle - Take a Calf’s Head with the Skin on, scald it clean from the Hair, split it & boil it tender, cut it in pieces about 2 Inches then put half a Pound of Butter with two spoonsfull of flour worked into it, in a Stew Pan large enough to hold all the things keep stirring it till it is brown, then put in about 3 quarts of Good Broth, add Sweet Herbs, viz. Thyme, Winter Savory, Sweet marjoram, parsley, & sweet Basil, chopt, very small indeed, put in a pint of Sherry, or White Wine, boil it a quarter of an hour, then put in the Head, season with Cayenne Pepper to your Taste put in force meat Balls, add Lemon Juice as you please after the Soup is put into the Tureen – to make force meat Balls - take some ready dress’d Veal or forst pull’d & chopt very fine, crumbs of Bread a little lemon rind mix this with a little chopt Ham if you have any, or tongue, roll into a Paste with a little Butter & make them into small Balls with rolling it in the white of a Raw Egg, pop into water for a meni Everlasting Beef J.D.F. To a large round of Beef take 3 ozs. Salt petre finely pounded, rub it well into the beef, & let it stand 5 or 6 Hours. Then season it well with common Salt, 3 ozs. Pepper & 2 ozs. of Alspice pounded, & a ¼ of a Pound of coarse brown Sugar. – Let it stand in this pickle a fortnight, turning it now & then; At the end of this time, it will be fit, to dress. – But if you wish it to be very high season’d, you may let it remain a few Days or a Week longer. When you dress it wash off the Salt & Spice, & put it into an earthen Pan to Bake; with some Beef Suet on the Top & Bottom chopt small. Cover it with a thin coarse Paste, & let it bake six or seven Hours in a good Steady Heat. When taken out of the Oven, pour the Gravy from it, & let it stand till cold It is suppos’d it will keep for ever; but the Experiment has never been able to be try’d, as it has always been eaten too soon, to prove it’s durability. Stew’d Peas. Mrs. St. John Put about a quart of Peas into a Stew Pan with an oz of Butter, [cross out] some Chives chopp’d small, pepper, & Salt, put a Cover on them, & let them stew, till the Peas are quite tender, then add the Yolk of an Egg well beat, & some cream, put it on the fire again, & keep stirring it, till it is quite Hot - then Dish it up. Mange Ointment. – Stack Pole’s One quart train Oil 1 ℔. flower of Brimstone ½ ℔. Sulphur Vierum ½ ℔. Gun powder, 4 ozs – Spirits of Turpentine well mix’d – Keep the Dogs warm, & from getting wet, during the Influence of the Operation, give One Dose of Syrup of Buck thorn afterwards For a Cow that don’t clean well after Calving Grains of Paradise, & Fenugreek Seeds, [cross out] of each 2 drachm’s, Anniseed ½ oz. boil’d in a quart of Ale; If that has not the desir’d effect, repeat the Dose [cross out] at the expiration of the fourth hour; It has never fail’d of answering in Ten Hours from the second Dose - Mc: Dene For the Scab in Sheep. Tobacco Dust ½ ℔ = Green Broom a large Handful, Dulberry Roots, a large Handful or two, flower of Brimstone ¼ ℔, boil them in Urine, Beef Brine, & Soap Boiler’s Lea; one Hour, into which you may add 1/ oz of Sublimate Water. Shake it well, when using it, & rub it well on the ridge of the Sheep’s Back - ꝶ: For Sprains – H: Haines Oil of Turpentine 1/2 oz. add gently vitriolic Acid 1 Drachm, Oil of Bays 2. ozs. mix well with 4 ozs. of Spirits of Wine – famous for Sprains in the legs, Back Sinews &c – ꝶ: Blacking - J. Robins Ivory Black ¼ ℔ - 1 Pint of Vinegar, - ¼ ℔ of Treacle, 1 oz of Brown Sugar, 2 Table Spoonsfull of Sweet Oil, ½. oz Oil of Vitriol boil the whole 5 Minutes - ꝶ: - To take out Stains from white or yellow Breeches Mix flour of [cross out] Mustard & Vinegar to the consistence of thin paste, rub it on the part Stain’d, & when dry brush it off - ꝶ: Roache’s, Embrocation, for the Hooping Cough, to be rub’d on the Back Bone - ꝶ: For the Hooping Cough - Lady Harrington - The above Lady cur’d her Children with Antimonial Wine, & a few drops of Laudanum, The Laudanum to be taken by itself after the Wine has either operated, or settled quietly ꝶ: To keep Fowling Pieces, & other Arms from Rust Take 1 oz of Camphor, 2 ℔ Hogs lard, dissolve them together, & take off the Scum - Mix as much black lead as will bring them to an Iron Colour; rub your Arms with this & let it remain on 24 Hours; then rub them well with a linnen Cloth - & they will not rust for Six months - Sporting Magazine - ꝶ: To prevent, or help Cawdid Sheep. One Pint of Chamber lye, ½ ℔ Salt, ¼ pint of Spirits of Turpentine mix well together, & give every Sheep 3 Table spoonsfull - Monk ꝶ. For the Bloody Scour, in Calves – Take one Handful of the rind of Black Thorn, Do. Of Meadow Sweet; or the Roots of Turmeric, 1. oz; of Cummin Seed 1. oz boil’d in 2 quarts of Lye - Give ½ Pint at a Time to a Calf once a Day – J. Powe ꝶ. For a Bullock that voids Bloody Urine Take some green Oak Bark ¼. ℔ boil it in spring water till it has stain’d the water to a red Colour, Comfrey, Shepherd’s purse, Plantain, Sage, Green Hemp, or Nettles, of each one Handful, boil them with the Bark, strain it, then put a large Handful of Salt in the water, some alum, bole armenic, chalk, or the powder of Sea Coal; If the Beast is weak give less than a Quart, if Strong more - One Dose generally has the desir’d effect, but the second has always prov’d successful - Give it New Milk warm. J. Powe – ꝶ. For the Murrain in Sheep. Take some dried flowers of wormwood, or Rue, powder’d, mix it with common Salt, & give it to such Sheep, as are infected, or likely to be infected - 1. Drachm is enough for each Sheep, to be given in a Spoonful of Chamberlye, in the morning. To Stew Pears. Ms. Hamilton. To 4. ℔s of Pears par’d, scoop’d & fill’d with Lemon Peel & one or two Cloves; add 2. ℔s of Sugar, pound Cloves, & add as much or more, as will cover a shilling, a little Cochineal if necessary - Stew them in a pint of Port Wine - ꝶ. To make Lime Water – Ext-r Put a Stone of Quick Lime, hot from the Kiln, into a Milk Pan, & pour on Six quarts of boiling Water from a Tea kettle; Stir it about till the Lime is quite dissolved; let it stand till the next Day, then pour off the fine Liquor, for use, taking Care not to disturb the White Deposit from the Bottom; & that You put it into a clean close stopp’d Jar for use - ꝶ - For the Scab in Sheep – Extr Dissolve One Ounce of Corrosive Sublimate of Mercury, in one Gallon of clear Water, then add to it, two Quarts of common Lime Water for Aqua Celeis as above - . and one quarter of a [crossed out] pint of Spirit of Turpentine - With this Mixture wash every scabby sheep, & every part of the Sheep affected, dividing the wool, & rubbing in the Liquor, so as effectually to wet the Skin, underneath, & around the Scabs - N:B: Repeat the Washing once a Week in dry weather if not watch for a promising dry Day - - Hoose in Cattle - M: May. Take 2 ozs. of Flower of Brimstone, 2 ozs. Bole Almanack, 2 ozs. Fennugreek Seed, All pulveriz’d very fine, then take a large handful of Rue, do. Garlic, Do. Chimney Soot, mix all together & boil the whole in Urine allowing a pint to each yearling - Then pour about a Tea Spoonful of Oil of Amber into each [cross out] nostril of the Animal - Repeat the Drench &c in the course of a Week, & after that bleed the Animal - Keep them in overnight before Drenching, & for two Hours after drenching - ꝶ: For Scab in Sheep {Farmers Journal} R.P.} Take 1. ℔ of Hogs lard, 2 ozs. Quick silver put the latter into a Mortar with 1. oz of Venice Turpentine, to kill it working them well to incorporate it nicely; Melt the Hogs lard in some pot or vessel, then add the quick silver & Turpentine, & keep stirring the whole till it is perfectly incorporated, & got thick Be strictly cautious in mixing the Ingredients well, as on that much depends, as to the safety of the Sheep - For those much infected with the Scab, each Sheep will require 2 oz & ½ but 1 oz & ½ is sufficient as a preventative: Begin at the Nose, & lay on the Salve from thence direct along the Back, by opening the Wool so as to be able to rub it on the Skin, down to the End of the Tail, & in the same manner along the Belly to the Throat & up to the Chin; three sheds on each side; one on each side the Neck, and down the Fore Shank on the Outside & Inside, & the same the Hind Leg - It must not be done in rainy weather unless the Sheep be kept in till it becomes fine & dry - Do. S. n. ꝶ. – Pro. Jm: Burt – Spirit: Eth: vitiolic ℥i: Tinct: Lavender Comp ℥i. Two spoonsfull, to be taken when the Head is disorder’d. - Mrs. Pettles Beer Water 5 Gallons, Wheaten Bran ½ a Strike, Hops 2. ozs. Treacle 1. ℔ boil the Bran and Hops together 10 Minutes, strain if off as other Beer, & set it to cool, then take some of the Wort, & mix a Tea Cup of Barm & the Treacle with it, then put it into the Cask, & let it work, as other Beer, if you should not have enough to fill up the Cask when wanted, you may use warm water - It will come to drinking in two days, & if you Bottle it will be as fresh as Spruce Beer - Mrs. Couch To pickle Pork – 4 Gallons of Water, 6. ℔s common Salt 4 Gallons of Water. 6. ℔s common Salt 1. ℔ coarse Sugar - 4 ozs. Salt Petre, boil & Strain it well, when cold put in your Beef, Mutton, Tongues, or Pork. The Meat must be cover’d with the pickle. - In nine, or Ten days, it will be fit for use. - This pickle will keep good for three Months, if it be well boil’d, & skinn’d, at the end of Month, or six Weeks, the Month’s end, the best lime - You may then smoke the Meat a Week or dry it in the common way - Mrs. Couch - To cure Hams. - For two Hams about 14. ℔ each, put 1. ℔ comon Salt, ¾. ℔ of [cross out] coarse Sugar, 1. ℔ Treacle, 3. ozs Salt Petre, 3 ozs. Sal Prunella, & 3 ozs of pepper. The Hams to be beat with a stick till they are soft - The Pickle must be rubb’d into them, before the fire, must be turn’d, & rubb’d, in pickle every Day for three Weeks Cheeks of Bacon, & Tongue, to be beat the same as Hams. Soda Water Super Carbonate of Soda ¾. ozs Citric Acid ½. oz rub’d well together into fine Powder, which keep in a Bottle well stopp’d. - a Small Tea spoonful of the Above to half a Pint of Cold spring water makes a Drink similar to Soda. - A Drink similar to Seltzer Waeter the above Salts to be in equal quantities to the same Portion of Water - they ought to be made a few Hours before they are wanted & immediately well cork’d. - M: John Edwards ꝶ Bilious Pills Rhubarb ½ Drachm, 1 Pilla Rufi ½ Drachm Oil Peppermint 20 Drops - - Bilious Pills - Capt. Salt of wormwood 20. Grains Cochineal- 10. Grains Spring Water- 4. ozs Misce Bene, & shake well in the phial. A Table Spoonful to be taken four times a Day, by a Child of five years old; & proportionally according to the Age of the Patient. N:B: The Cochineal must be very finely pulveriz’d - Bruises & Sprains. Do- Spirit of Wine 4 ozs, Camphor 1. oz. Spirit of Sal Ammoniac 1. oz. Spirit of Lavender, composit 1. oz.
