Fogarty The House of Representatives Washington 25, D. C. Dear Sir: I am writing in reference to your recent public state- ments that the N.I.H. budget should be increased or medicine is doomed. For some 25 years I have practiced medicine in Maryland or the District of Columbia, and have referred several patients to N.I.H. In my personal experience these so-called outstanding medical scientists have not produced a single cure or remedy for any disease; in fact, all our modern medi- cal progress has been through private practitioners and medical schools or privately endowed clinics. It seems to me you are merely trying to get socialized medicine in the back-door and you believe the false premise that government can do things better than pri- vate enterprise. In my experience nothing in any field has been done better by government bureaucracy; and I hate to see our government expanded into areas where they waste the taxpayers money, increase our Federal debt and lead to more inflation. Very truly yours, LULA QR deLhong R. Rhett Rathbone, M. D. RRRemy
