Subject: Re: Paperback edition, "Madness and Memory" Date: Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 6:29:27 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: Louis Sokoloff To: Prusiner, Stanley Dear Stan: Thanks for sending me the addition to your book. Even without it, however, | enjoyed the book very much. In fact, | consider it a masterpiece, not only for the science in it but it because it is such a well-written and fascinating account of a great discovery in the face of extraordinary negativism and hostility, not only on the part of colleagues and fellow scientists but also of the so-called news providers who more and more are polluting the distribution of what should be true news and not propaganda. The problem is growing and is now just as evident in the distribution of political and social information by the news services today. The idolatry of and dedication to sensationalism at the expense of truth in the distribution of news has, | believe, become a danger to the survival of democracy. It has been a dreadful winter here in the East and has been hard on one with the disabilities | have. Now that the weather is about to improve, | hope | will too. Are you coming to the Academy meeting in April? If so, leave some time for us to get together. Best regards. Lou
