Many thanks for your thoughtful letter of July 9.  It was a genuine pleasure to participate in your swearing-in ceremony as Director of the National Institutes of Health on July 1.  NIH has an outstanding record of breakthroughs in medical research and in dedicated care for all the patients under its supervision.  I am confident that, under your direction, the National Institutes of Health will continue to provide the finest in medical treatment, as well as an atmosphere of hope and concern, for all who make use of its splendid facilities.
