Dear Allan[sic],
It is no idle phrase when I tell you that your letter has touched me profoundly.  The last difficult years have been immeasurably worth while if they have bought me the gift of your affection and your esteem and the knowledge that your sympathy and understanding will be available in the years to come is the best guarantee for the future that I can ask no matter what particular niche I may be shoved in to.  I'm ready for anything!  I can't say anything more.
