Lecture Vol. 17 -Tab 1 (Pst SG yrs) May 21, 1990 Cover C. Everett Koop, MD, ScD World Conference on Lung Health American Lunch Association (American Thoracic Society) Boston, Massachusetts May 21,1990 This speech, in a sense, was a homecoming for me because it was the meeting of this same group in Florida in 1984 where I announced what could have been the plans for a Smoke-Free Society by the Year 2000 and especially the goal of graduating a high school class that was essentially smoke-free. Neither of those goals were achieved, but tremendous progress toward those goals was made and it was one of the better eras in the history of smoking cessation in our constant battle since 1964. When I gave this talk I deleted just beforehand 8 pages and added a new one. As with all speeches on smoking, there is a lot of repetition of things used in speeches previously given. A lot of material contained herein is found in the lecture given to the Missouri Coalition on March 8, 1990. Nevertheless, for the student of smoking and the tobacco wars in America, it was including in this archive.
