10 October 1986 Dear Surgeon General, I was deeply touched by your letter and moved by the fact that inspite of your busy schedule and responsibilities you took the time to inquire about my health. I was lucky indeed to be a beneficiary of the outstanding skills of American physicians - who managed to perform my triple by-pass surgery, successfully enough to enable me to be out of the hospital after 6 days and back to work 21 days after surgery. I seize this opportunity to renew the expression of my sentiment of gratitude for the campaign against smoking initiated by you during your visit to Israel. As a direct result of your efforts and the publicity given to your statements - we see today an improvement in the situation in this respect in Israel: the number of people that smoke has diminished. Wishing you and your family good health and in the hope to have the privilege to see you soon again. Sincerely, Meir Rosenne Ambassador
