Phone Conversation with Dr. Maurice Visscher (typed on 3/21/66) Hello Clarence. Yes, Maurice. Dr. Dennis: I gather from not hearing from you that there isn't anything that I need do down there, but I had some information I thought I'd pass on to you before you leave. No. 1) We've had a bit of a windfall, I suspect, in that my son came home from Dartmouth with a friend of his from Montana, We were talking about this and it turns out that this boy has had an open-heart operation done himself by John Kirklin and his family which is very much concerned about this sort of thing and the family happens to be friends of the family of Sen. Mike Mansfield, and so I am taking all of the information I have home tonight and will show all of this to the boy so that he knows. He is a good smart boy and I know he will grasp what it's all about and possibly I will send a letter to his father with the suggestion that he communicate with Sen. Mansfield. Dr. Visscher: That would be good. Dr. Dennis: I will pursue it and see what we can get from that. Then I talked with our veterinarian here, who is Dr. Albert Schaffer who was mentioned by name by Cristine Stevens, you recollect, when she testified. Dr. Visscher: Yes. Dr. Dennis: And his idea is that he thinks our position would be immensely strengthened if we had support from the practicing veterinarians in the country and he thinks that they are a little bit leery of this now because they are afraid that they might lose some of their business if they were tied up in the public eye with experimentalists. And he suggested that we get hold of a Dr, L. Myer Jones. Now he maybe very well known to you. Dr. Visscher: Yes, I know L. Myer - actually the person who is going to testify is Frank Todd - who is the Executive Director of the AVMA, The American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Dennis: Then this is no contribution, is it? Dr. Visscher: Well, I think we are ahead of it. I don't think there is any reason for two of them. Todd is well oriented, He did testify at the hearings before. Clarence, I want to tell you, I'm leaving in about two minutes, I am going to see Senator Mondale? downtown. I think we have everything under control. Lowell Greenbaum is going to speak for the New York State Society. Dr. Dennis: Excellent - you've talked to him, have you? Dr. Visscher: Yes, and Sig Rich, from the California State Society. Sig Rich is the veterinarian in charge of the vivarium in UCLA. Dr. Dennis: Yes, I know. I sat next to him during the hearings. Dr. Visscher: Well, thanks for calling. Dr. Dennis: You will let me know if there is anything I can do. Thanks very much.
