February 27 Dear Sol: The crises over the Loyalty Oath has become acute. On Friday, the Regents laid down an ultimatum: sign by April 30 or be fired (newspaper headlines). You can imagine what a blockbuster this was. Of course we're going to put up a hell of a fight, but now the only possible outcomes are either resignation of the Regents or destruction of Cal as a great university, and I'm afraid, incredible as it seems, that the latter is more probable. Unless, we win, I am through here. If the Senate backs down, I will sign on April 30 and look for another job. If it supports non-signers, I would sign and will presumably be fired as of July 1. In the former case I can afford to wait and look around, but in the latter I must get another job immediately. Will you keep this in mind, mention it to people you meet, and let me know of any possible openings? Best wishes Roger
