November 15, 1968 conn ae Dr. Joshua Lederberg Stanford University Medical School Department of Genetics Palo Alto, Calif. ‘(UL S.A. Dear Dr. Lederberg: In the course of 1969-1970, the Weizmann Institute of Science will celebrate its 25th anniversary. A number of major events, to be held in Europe, in the United States, and, of course, in Israel, are now being planned in connection with this occasion. Among them is a special issue of the Institute's periodical publication, REHOVOT, which perhaps you have seen before, and of which I now enclose a recent copy for your information. The editors of REHOVOT hope that this special issue will reflect, in some measure, the story of the Institute's growth - over a remarkable quarter of a century and in a most remarkable country - and that it will also project some view of tomorrow's world, as envisaged by leading scholars, scientists, artists, educators, and statesmen. We would be most grateful if we could include in this issue a contribution from you. Would you consider writing an article for us on 'The Potentiality of Science, Now and in the 21st Century," with particular reference perhaps to the battle against disease? We fully understand how very busy you are and that this request is, in itself, an imposition, but perhaps you will, nonetheless, find it possible to send us from 1500 to 2000 words on this subject by the end of April, 1969. If the particular topic which we have proposed does not appeal to you, please feel quite free to alter it or make it more sp cific. At all events, we very much hope that you will agree to contribute to this special issue and that we will hear from you very soon in this regard. Needless to say, we shall pay for the article.
