This note gives me an opportunity to ex-
press my gratitude for a adam debt I have
never known how to repay. The Cooper Union
library was a vital source of my own educa~
tion, when I was a student at Stuyvesant H.S
(1938-41). I have a very happy recollection
of having been treated with the utmost con-
sideration when I was devouring the contents
of its stacks, learning chemistry and mathe-
matics on my own schedule -- and when I
might well have been rebuffed or ignored,
as often happened at other institutions.
