Dear Dr. Lederberg:

I wish to audit the course being offered this winter
quarter by your Department entitled Medical Genetics 201, being
held Thursday and Friday mornings at 11:00 A.M, As special
permission is required from a faculty member, and I know no
members of your faculty, I am writing directly to you. My in-
terest in medical genetics stems from a family I first began
studying in 1961 which demonstrated a hereditary resistance
to anticoagulant drugs. This is the first described kindred
of such a disorder and is apparently the first description of
hereditary resistance to the biologic action of any drug. This
year I have discovered a second family with an equal degree of
resistance; so far, I have found the resistance in i1 members
of the family. As you can see from the enclosed reprint, I have
been breeding rats at Stanford with Dr. Judith Pool of the De-
partment of Medicine that also have a hereditary resistance to
anticoagulant drugs. :
