gO 70LU~ October 24, 1974 Dr. J. Niesch Ciba-Geigy Limited CH-4002 Basel Switzerland Dear Dr. Nilesch, It was a pleasure to have had a chance to talk to you when Dr. Cape brought you to our home, I suspect we may also have your to thank for the gift of some special Penaten cream which we received in the mail from Switzerland. However, our daughter has been doing very well now without any special further attention but the opurt of the gift was certainly most welcome. Shoe I am writing to you now in resonance with some remarks that you made about your interest in special enzymes produced by certain microbial species. I do not recall whether you mentioned the hydrolysis of agar but it turns out that an efficient agarase, substantially free of nuclease, would be most helpful in our current laboratory studies involving the fractionation of DNA by agar electrophoresis. Our problem is to get effécient recovery of the DNA from specific bands with non-traumatic treatments. Any help or suggestions that you might offer us on this score would of course be most deeply appreciated. I look forward in any event to the possibility of seeing you again on other matters and remain, Sincerely yours, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics JL/rr Pb Meroe. Clin Crp A Aet Bek Wrxeidnef Cen
