Dear Dr. Lederberg:

Thank you for the copy of your letter of October 22 to
Phil Handler. As a new member of the Council of the National
Academy of Sciences, I am still not adequately familiar with what
precautions are taken both to be assured that reports are not
affected by conflicts of interest and to safeguard against possible
false charges of conflict. However, I certainly agree that these
are important concerns for the Academy and as a Council Member
will pay careful attention to them.
