DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE _ NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH BETHESDA, MD. 20014 ; AREA CODE 301 TEL: 656-4000 > May 20, 1969 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Stanford University Medical Center Stanford University School of Medicine Stanford, California 94305 Dear Dr. Lederberg: —— I am enclosing some background material for our June 19 meeting. In- == cluded in this package are, a historical synopsis of the study, the various _" forms used in the study, frequency distributions and cross tabulations of important variables, a paper on the socioeconomic index used to describe our . population and a plan for genetic analysis. eae ~ 19 S The two books with the forms were printed before the final 7-year battery of tests was developed. From this extensive battery I am sending the family health history form FHH-9, which has been designed to bring up to date the socioeconomic and genetic information which was collected prenatally on the SE- and the GEN. 5-8. The tabulations have been produced for the 1959-1964 cohort which comprises about three quarters of the population. I am sure that this will give a fair idea of the frequency distribution of the variables in the population. $07 We have developed a socioeconomic index, using the methodology of the Bureau of the Census, so that we can describe our population and compare it with the U.S. population. The paper gives the methodology, and a descriptive and comparative picture of our population. The plan for genetic analysis was developed by us here, at the request of my Chief, but it is only a skeleton plan. I hope that the panel will help modify, supplement or radically change it, and that it will oversee the implemen- tation of the final product. -~_ a ae ee oe OO oP ue ide Yoel" a Let us plan to meet at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, in my office which is located in room 720, Wiscon Building, on Wisconsin Avenue and East- West Highway, about a mile down from the N.I.H. reservation.
