PoP ye aw ig tT eUU GS Memo from To: py Moravesik CJ JOSHUA LEDERBERG APR 2 31975 Mr Jackson indeed does display many admirable qualities; and he may yet emerge as the best cadi- date that the Democrats have to offer. I certainly can understand the reasons for encouraging support and advice to him. But I am deeply troubled by his intransigeni hawkishness with respect to arms control agreements with the Soviets -- and do not confuse my position with sentimental dovishness. I am fearful that if he were in the White House we might be in grave risk of over-reactions to Soviet threats and of provocations that might be even more dangerous than naive appeasement. So far he has rejected all advice that my well-informed colleagues have attempted to offer him by this route, and I fear that it would be futile to perservere ; unless you have some contrary indication.
