TX/28.list _990609 (writeup). o:r I had been struck by Li, Fraumeni et al., Cancer Mortality among chemists. JNCI 43:1159-1164 (1969)., and the remark that malignant lymphoma and pancreas CA accounted for half of the excess moratlity. This was reinforced by Harriett Ephrussi-Taylor (1968) early death from that cause; and some number of others in my acquaintanceship. (Eventually later also Kim Atwood.) I thought to seek more specificity in chemical etiology by bibliographic survey of the careers of 55 chemists listed as died of pancreatic cancer and 55 from other causes. Cf correspondence with Fraumeni (1970). Note names of decedents should be confidential, though the data come from death certificates and announcements in C&EN. The results were inconclusive; though there is some todo about photographic chemicals. Ann Watson, a Human Bio student, assisted me. Name cconfusion was a significant problem. ---------- original materials sent to NLM this date. -------------
