RUTGERS UNIVERSITY The State University of New Jersey INSTITUTE OF MICROBIOLOGY June 16, 1954 NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY CHARTER 7-1766 Dr. Joshua Lederberg The University of Wisconsin Department of Genetics Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Joshua: I talked with Dr. Waksman today after his return from Boston. He is very interested in inviting Tom and he wants Tom to send him a formal application outlining his present status, name of the fellowship and plans for studies - all in brief; and enclose his curriculum vitae. I believe that the future for Tom looks bright here, and within this large group of people and visitors he may find good friends. Iam one, at least. I enjoyed very much your visit here and talking with you and Esther. In the meantime I have "induced" new SM mutants in K-12 strain\W- 1336 (F+) (%6-2) and today I have some recombinants between this strain and W-1177 (F-) to check for SM resistance. I wonder what would happen. Best regards for you and Esther. . Best regards, -— oclaw Waclaw Szybalski WS:DP P.S. I shall appreciate receiving the parental strains to W-1702 and W-1697 i.e. strains W-1 and 58-272. Would you tell me what are the deficiencies of W-1 and W-1702 and what is the origin of W-1 and 58-272 strains.
