Dear Sol:

Esther and I really are mich indebted to the Illinois group for
its gracious performance Saturday. I hope you pass this thanks on
to Gunny and Lu in particular.

. I gave your manipulator over to Qunny Saturday night, and hope
that he and it will have arrived safely in Urtana, Thank you very
much for the loan of it. Although we could not make mich use of the
receiver end, owing to the misalignment, we had some trouble for a
while with the pumps on the controller, and thisasahelpful to have a
spare .

May I use the occasion to remind you about sending m a lysozyme~
susceptible B. megaterium? I have been playing around myself a bit wAthh
a protoplast~like system in B. coli, and would like the real McCoy for
comparison. I'll let you know more about this very shortly when some
ambiguities are cleared up. My interest in this is only the hope of
encouraging a DNA-mediated transduction in E. coli, against which the
rigid wall is possibly one of several barriers. I hope you have not
been neglecting the opportunity to try the same thing with mgateriun:
