Dear Dr, Lederberg:

I was very glad to learn from your letter of August 17 which
reached me only a few days ago that your work on ''bacterial protoplasts"
has led you to become interested in the so-called L-forms of bacteria as
well as in the organisms of the pleuropneumonia group, It was not clear
to me from reading your interesting communication on this subject whether
or not the "bacterial protoplasts" that you studied produced colonies on solid
media similar to those of the L-forms of bacteria, This it seems to me is
a rather crucial point,

I regret very much that I no longer have reprints on my paper
in BACTERIOLOGICAL REVIEWS of 1941. However, if you have not already
done so I would suggest that you read my chapter on the PLEUROPNEUMONIA
GROUP in the second edition of the book on "BACTERIAL AND MYCOTIC
INFECTIONS OF MAN" edited by Dubos. I would particularly like to call
your attention to the section on page 22 entitled: "Relation of pleuropneumonia-like
colonies associated with various bacteria to the pleuropneumonia group. I would
also like to call your attention to a review by D. G. f.f. Edward, Journ. Gen.
Microbiol.1954, 10,27 to 64.

I deeply regret that my entire collection of pleuropneumonia
organisms was lost while I was away from my laboratory’ du ing the war. I
would suggest that you write to Dr, Harry E. Morton, Bites. Microbiology
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa., who will atel be able to supply
you with human strains although I doubt whether he has any of the saprophytic
strains. Accordingly, I would also suggest that you write to Dr, D. G. f.f.
Edward, Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, Kent, who should be

able to supply you with saprophytic strains from sewage as well as from
the genital tract of cattle.
