August 17, 1956 Dear Dr. Sabin: In connection with current studies on the formation of protoplasts in Escherichia coli, I can't help but return to the problems of L-forms which have recurred from time to time in this laboratory. I realize that their similarities may be more or less profound, but at least as background, I would like to familiarize myself with pleuropneumonia-like forms. Have you maintained your collection of these over the years? If so, could I ask you for subcultures of one or two types that might be most favorable for seeing their mode of multiplication? Other things being equal, a saprophytic form that could be grown on non-proteinaceous medium would be preferred. If you cannot conveniently comply with this request, to whom might you refer me in this country? In the same connection, I would appreciate any of your publications or reviews on these organisms as may still be available. With best regards, Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg
