Dear Dr. Lederberg:

Thank you for your kind remarks and interesting speculations.

I had missed your paper in Nature on the inhibition of motility
by individual cells. This technical feat will undoubtedly
provide singular opportunities for testing the hypotheses of
the clone selection theory. We have attempted to design
experiments which we hoped would provide inferential data on
this question but have not been so clever as to approach it
directly as you and Dr. Nossal have so nicely done.

I am enclosing a copy of the Journal of Experimental Medicine
paper and will send one to your colleague in Australia, We
are attempting to get out a series of observations which we
have made on the fate of heterologous proteins in neonatal
animals and the ontogeny of the immune response during the
first few weeks of life. But as a consequence of a recent
change of jobs, they are not yet ready for publication.

The meetings in Paris next spring are delightful to anticipate

and I do indeed hope we will have an opportunity to discuss
some of these concepts more fully. With best wishes.
