Memo to File Howard Schachman (Berkeley)

Called him 10/21/60. He does not know of any experimental work on light
scattering by bacterial suspensions and the existing instruments are not tog
Satisfactory since they do not get closer to the principal beam at about 20.
In fact, there are not even suitable cells easily available. These, of course,
should be My cylindrical. He knows of no work on the ultraviolet but is
not certain how informative this would be insofar as in the case of DNA you
would have a higher resolution based on the lower wave length. He agreed that

there are some interesting measurements to be made here but the existing
instruments are not adequate.

Katz had built the light scattering photometer that they use in his own
laboratory and this is a useful, though cumbersome instrument. However, he was

not able to revise his rather negative judgement about Katz for our program.
He will be coming down to Stanford next week.
