September 16, 1955 Dr. Frank Fenner Professor of Microbiology John Curtin School of Medical Research Canberra, A.C.T. Dear Dr, Fenner: Thank you for your very kind letter of the 9th. The rumor to which you referred has some basis in fact, namely that Professor Rubbo has invited us to visit his department during (our) summer of 1957 (not 1956) and we have tentatively agreed to such a plan if the financial and other details can be arranged. I would suggest that you consukt him on the momentary status of these plans. Of course we should not want to miss an opportunity to visit you at Canbsgra. Thank you for continuing to exchange reprints, which I appreciate very much. I was interedted to note your comment on the modification of your rabbits, as well as your mention of Holloway's work on Ps. aertginosa. We did some work a few years ago on Ps. fluorescens (one, omly,of Stanier's strains) but found no evidaace then of recombination among auxotrophic mutants. We have hoped to extend that study to additional strains, but have not gone further as yet. Is the aeruginosa system a transduction (mediated by a cellular fraction) or does it require intact cells?
