UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE ESCUELA DE MEDICINA INSTITUTO DE QUIMICA FISIOLOGICA Y PATOLOGICA Borgofio 1470 - Santiago Mareh 20 1959 _ 2 Dear Josh: Just a few lines to enclose the copy of a letter I sent you more than a month ago. I suspeet that it got lost in the mail, In the meantime we have confirmed that 3091 and 3092 do not have the methyl-galactoside permease but 3091 forms it when induced with TMG, 3092 gives a borderline result upon induction, it looks more towards anegative. 2247 appears to be a complete negative with regardto the methyl~galactoside permease. The correlation between ability to utilize galactose and presence of the methyl~-galactoside permease holds well so far, Monod's permease and the methyl~galactoside permease are certainly different because we have by now the mayority of the possible phenotypes. yours,
