UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY 362 NOYES LABORATORY OF CHEMISTRY URBANA May 21, 1953 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin ffadison, Wisconsin Year Joshua: Thanks for your letter telling me the encouraging news about the Heart institute fellowship, whitch I hope will come out as you predict, In the mean time I have an offer of a professorship in the Medical School of Chile in Santiago. It is a very attractive offer considering it is permanent and that the school has just finished new buildings with very modern laboratories and they are anxious to develop a solid research program. The only difficulty with the proposition is that a Special law will have to be passed by the Congress authorizing a non M.D. to teach in the Medical School. The position will not be available until January, 195) but could be postponed until April, 195. i don't know how my accepting the position will affect my applying to work in Madi son. About working in your Lab during the summer I certainly would like very much to do it. I am very interested in the field of bacterial genetics and I think I would profit a great deal by cooperating in one of your projects during that time. Iam leaving Urbana by the end of this week. Between that time and the Ist of June I will be in Evanston at Raquel's house. I will possibly see you at the C. S. Harbor meeting. If anything of importance occurs you can write to me to 1003 Grove St. - Evanston, Il. Thanks again, Best regards to Esther and you. Sincerely yours, Boris Rotman P.S. Otto says they are coming up there this weekend,
