Dear Professor Lederberg,

I am very pleased that I am still
on your mailing list. I like to read what you write, it
is a difficult subject but you write particularly clearly
and when I have read you, I know what is going on.

But I wanf specially to compliment you on your essay on
Exobiology. That really is something as they say “out of
this world": I am not sure that I have as you put it
"recaptured my equilibrium" after reading it. I felt a bit
giddy when reading it. I never had given much thought to
these conceptions of space travel, and planetary investigati-
ons , but you have brought the whole matter to life for me.
And I see now that we cannot just leave the further develop—
ment to the physicists. People like you, hhe leading bio-
logists, must hage a say, must beconsulted, must be able to
advise. Thanks to you I see the urgency of that now, and I
trugt people willlisten to you.

Thank you for writing all this and for letting me have a
reprint.

I am still struggling wit the problem of bacteriial motili-
ty, and I am getting things on paper again, after a long time
of mothingness.
