INST. FOR TUMORBIOLOGI KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET STOCKHOLM 60 - DEPT. OF TUMOR BIOLOGY Stockholm, January 10, 1961 KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET STOCKHOLM 60 Drs. Esther and Joshua Lederberg Stanford University Department of Genetics Medical Center Palo Alto, Calif, USA Dear Esther and Joshua: Thank you very much for your letter of January 5, and all the trouble Esther has taken to find us a house, and what a house! It just sounds perfect, Please do take it by all means on our behalf, We shall have no difficulties in revising the dates of our stay for the veriod between June 15 and September 8, if this is not inconvenient for you. Shall we plan to arrive to Stanford on June 14? This would be certainly quite convenient for us, Or shall we better plan for June 15? The Summer playschool for the children sounds just wonderful. We are just trying to make arrangements that both Peter and llargareta should start taking English lessons as soon as possible so that they should be able to start with the proper activities as soon as possible after our arrival. I have not yet heard from Ted Hauschka but I should be somewhat worried about stopping in Buffalo on the way to California, I think that with such a large family we should just move as fast as possible to Stanford’ and stay right there, Otherwise, I am afraid that we may try to do too much and achieve nothing. Of course, if Ted has a shorter stay in hig mind, we might always think it over, I also have an invitation to Texas but I should really like to concentrate on doing some work and learning things,at Stanford most of the time. swe I am just now starting to prepare a sehedule for the lectures and I am wondering whether it can be assumed that all participants have a sufficient background in pathology to be able to follow histological terms or whether you think that I should include a short survey of the basic facts in tumor pathology? As to the visa, according to my vrevious experiences possible delays due to red tape cannot be overemphasized, for this reason, perhaps it would be wisest if we started with the visa of the maid separately, since she must be investigated on her own anyway, and any delay with her visa may completely upset our own plans, Yrerhaps we should proceed then with her papers, unless you think thetauthorization for our visa would come through within the next few weeks, in woich case it would be decidedly better to wait, Please let me know what you think of this, With warmest greetings and very many thanks for all the trouble vou have taken in finding us such a wonderful house which I am sure will greatly contribute to the peace of mind of even the junior members of the family. x $y the ty oropehas nova, As ever, Jane Seon .
