The University of Chicago CHICAGO 37, ILLINOIS Department of Bacteriology and Parasitology 8724 ELLIS AVENUE October 14, 1946 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Yale University Osborn Botanical Laboratory New Haven, Connecticut Dear Dr. Lederberg: Thank you for your letter of October Sth. I hope that the reprints will be of some use to you. We have carried out relatively extensive studies on some of the other more common Salmonella types such as para A and para B and so far as our experience goes these forms have very simple nutritive requirements. We have not found it necessary to include amino acids or other organic sources of nitrogen, and most of the strains have grow in solutions containing acetates as the only source of organic carbon. At our entry into the war I found it necessary to put these and related studies on the shelf, for I have devoted all of my time to research on Asiatic cholera on 0.5.R.D. contract. I am hoping that now I shall be able to go back to this interupted work and get these studies under way again while at the same time tying up the loose ends of the cholera investigations. Thank you for your kind remarks regarding my revision of Jordan's Bacteriology. I am Sincerely yours, Pre naan William Burrows WB: eg °
