THE ROGKEFELLER INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH 66TH STREET AND YORK AVENUE NEW YORK 21,N_¥. 28 December |959 Dr. Joshua Lederberg a Professor of Genetics Stanford University Stanford, California Dear Dr. Lederberg: Dr. Halsted R, Holman who has been working here for the past five years has informed me that he has been offered the position of Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University Medical School and that he is very interested in taking the position. His only hesitation concerns the fact that the head of the department has not been chosen. It occurred to me that Dr. Holman himself would be a fine man for this higher position. | heard indirectly that you were involved in this selection and | wanted to inform you of the extremely high opinion we all have of Dr. Holman. He is certainly one of the outstanding men in clinical investigation and will undoubtedly become a professor of medicine in the future. Despite his investigative work he is an extremely able clinician and has sustained his interests in this area during his entire stay at this Institute. The work | reported at the Ciba meeting in Paris on antibodies to DNA in patients with lupus erythematosus was primarily his contribution. Efforts are underway to establish an independent unit here for Dr. Holman. How far these will progress | do not know. | hope we can keep him here but this may be impossible in view of his desires for a rather large clinical unit. [| know that Dr. Horsfall considers him one of the really outstanding young men at the Institute. | hope you don't mind this unsolicited letter but | thought you might not know what an outstanding man Dr. Holman is. Sincerely ae Henry inte HGK:cr
