1958 Dear Joshua, I trust you and Esther have recuperated from your travels. Last week, somewhat belatedly, I inquired about my future prospects here, salary being only one issue. I should have an answer soon. My point is that it would be distasteful for me and a waster of time for you to start bargaining until I can make up my mind whether I can bear the thought of moving. I shall have to do this very shortly, of course. Wisconsin seems very attractive, as it did from the first. Graduate students are not an important issue -- I am sure I would do my best for them and probably enjoy it. Actually my responsibilities to most of the young people I have here present the same problems. To turn to more interesting problems, I have been doing genetic experiments again lately, which is a welcome change. From a study of the effect of UV on recombination I think I have evidence for copy choice replication and against zygote formation [END PAGE ONE] [BEGIN PAGE TWO] in T2 -- disposing of the Visconti-Delbruch [sic] theory. All kinds of negative interference would thus have to be attributed to the heterozygotes, whose origin remains a great mystery. I believe my evidence for this is quite good and hope my enthusiasm is justified, especially since in all my early genetic experiments I never came to grips with basic issues. All this grew out of attempts -- more or less successful -- to demonstrate replication and genetic recombination in the presence of delaram[?] phenisol[?]. Best wishes for a bright new year! Al.
