Dear Professor Lederberg:

I am not certain that you have seen the enclosed
paper, which was quite important for the COSPAR 1964 re-
commendations with regard to sterilization levels. They
should of course be constantly reviewed in the light of
current knowledge, and they will be discussed again at the
next meeting of the Consultative Group on Potentially Harm-
ful Effects of Space Experiments. This meeting will pro-
bably take place in Moscow, April Sth. We will then also
consider what measures would be appropriate to further the
improvement of the techniques involved, in the light of a
recent statement by the Russian scientists, who express
willingness to co-operate in this matter, It would be most
helpful for me to hear your views before the Moscow meeting,
and I would appreciate if you drop me a line in Davis (c/o
Professor M, P, Starr, Department of Bacteriology, Univer-
sity of California) indicating when I might see you. I
will give a few lectures and seminars in Davis and expect
to be there between Saturday, March 13th and Sunday, March
28th,
