Fax: 44-223-353980 3 March, 1994 Dr Joshua Lederberg Rockefeller University New York, NY 10021-6399 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Dear Dr Lederberg, I am writing to enquire if you would consider writing a scientific obituary of Dr William Hayes, who died recently in London, for my journal, BioEssays. I am, of course, aware of the history of the bacterial recombination story and of the intersection of his work with yours, and would value this contribution from you, if it should be a possibility. I have read your various "Perspective" pieces in Genetics and have enjoyed them thoroughly. If you would prefer, however, not to write an obituary for Dr Hayes but would consider one for Dr Bernard Davis, we would also be glad to have that article. Dr Davis and I corresponded late last year and I believe that his last article was his "Roots" reminiscence for BioEssays (copy enclosed). There is, it should be mentioned, a small honorarium to authors for all BioEssays articles, in the form of the author's choice of a year's subscription to the journal or a cheque for $90. In case you are not familiar with our journal, I enclose a sample copy here, along with an obituary on Dr McClintock that we ran in 1992. I hope that you will be able to give this invitation -- for either Dr Hayes or Dr Davis -- favourable consideration. With best wishes, Yours sincerely Dr’Adam $. wiki pr Editor, BioEssays
