STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE 2398 SACRAMENTO STREET DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS SAN FRANCISCO 15, CALIFORNIA December 2, 1958 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Medical Genetics Genetics Building The University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Doctor Lederberg: First of all,may I add my heartfelt congratulations to the many you have already received. We at Stanford are truly proud and delighted over the honor which you have brought to yourself and which you will now be bringing to us. I know you will be pleased to know that The Commonwealth Fund has awarded me a fellowship covering the exact amount which I requested. This, together with my half-pay from Stanford, should adequately cover living and travel expenses for myself and child. Needless to say, I am delighted. I have just submitted an applicatinn to the Public Health Service asking for permission to continue my present research grant in Milan. This would enable me to take my senior technician with me, a plan which would provide many advantages. For one thing, she could set up our G-6-PD assays and we could probably do a considerable amount of screening of the Italian population. Dr. Cavalli has indicated great interest in this prospect. In addition, she is really very good, and I am sure would get a great deal out of the year just as I hope to. I was delighted to learn that you were participating in a symposium here on January 22nd. If you have a free evening while you are here, I would love to have you come to my house for dinner and meet some of your new colleagues. If there is anything I can do at this end to add to the pleasure of your trip, please do not hesitate to let me know. Once again, my heartfelt thanks for the large role which you have played in helping me achieve my plans for next year. Warm regards. Sincerely yours, Oo dh I eo. Ruth T.
