STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE 2398 SACRAMENTO STREET DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS SAN FRANCISCO 15, CALIFORNIA October 21, 1958 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Department of Medical Genetics Genetics Building The University of Wisconsin Madison 6, Wisconsin Dear Doctor Lederberg: Thank you very much for your answer to my letter of October 14th. In rereading my comments to you I realize that I did not make very clear Met reasons for wishing to include your name as a reference on my Lp are wt, aid FO bs ellowship applications. It seems to me that, if you are willing to ndicate the possibilities for collaborative efforts between our two Ly departments when you are at Stanford, it would considerably strengthen a point that I have already made to them, namely that a year of study of medical genetics will not only be productive for me personally, but will also help implement Stanford's new curriculum which is geared toward close integration between the clinical and pre-clinical depart- ments. I have found that I cannot be a recipient of more than one federal grant at one time. Therefore, instead of applying for a specific fellowship from the National Science Foundation, I shall revise my present Public Health research grant application to include funds which would enable both me and my research associate to spend a year abroad. In addition, I shall also apply to Commonwealth, as I feel that they should be particularly interested in any program which might help implement our new curriculum. I do not at the moment plan to be in the East before January. Should an opportunity arise, however, I shall make every effort to include a visit to Wisconsin. Again, many thanks for everything. Sincerely yours, Jf. ff . Cc) Cav So f-2- Ruth T. Gross, M.D. Associate Professor in Pediatrics Acting Executive RTG:jb
