@D GEORGE E. MOORE, M.D., PH.D. DIRECTOR STATE OF NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HERMAN E. HILLEBOE, M.D. ROSWELL PARK MEMORIAL INSTITUTE COMMISSIONER BUFFALO 3, NEW YORK January 3, 1961 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Stanford University School of Medicine Palo Alto, California Dear Josh: During our last meeting you mentioned that you might welcome some financial aid in supporting the proposed stay of George and Eva Klein at your laboratory. Meanwhile, I have arranged for an evaluation of our fellowship program by George which he can do either enroute to you or on his way home. We can pay him approximately $500 in terms of consultation fees for 2 or 3 days! work, Another possibility which may be helpful to you came up at a meeting of the International Union Against Cancer which I attended in Washington recently as a member of the U. S. National Committee. We were asked for opinions concerning the fellowship fund distribution of the Eleanor Roosevelt Foundation for Cancer Research, This foundation will soon have available about $200, 000 annually for visiting foreign fellows on the advanced post-doctoral level. I strongly proposed that this program could be launched by awarding both the Klein's whatever funds you had planned to pay them during their stay with you, suggesting that money which you had already appropriated for this purpose might be needed by you in other directions, This proposal received some enthusiastic support, but several more conservative committee members wanted to go slowly on plans for these funds, It seems to me that if a personal move were made by you directly through Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and the funds were requested for the Klein's, you may well succeed in obtaining complete coverage of all costs involved, Please don't tell my friends how you found out about this. With best wishes for a happy 1961 also to Mrs, Lederberg, Yours ever, —_ J CR TSH:np Theodore S. Hauschka, Ph. D.
