SEP 24 1962 THE LILLY RESEARCH LABORATORIES EL! LILLY AND COMPANY INDIANAPOLIS 6G, IND.,U. S.A. September 18, 1962 Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Chairman Department of Genetics School of Medicine Stanford University Stanford, California Dear Dr. Lederberg: Thank you for your letter of September 14 with welcome comments on our ribotide amidate work. Concerning the thymidylic derivative, I will have to do some work on the cold synthesis. I hope we will be able to do the c14 or tritium label later here or at S.I.M.B. I have given some thought recently to extending this work to the 5 FU series as this would add to the picture and be, chemi- cally, actually easier in the last step of the synthesis. Ig, will communicate on this with Dr. Aronow and, if agreeable, wiht cau) I will contact Dr. Heidelberger at Wisconsin. He has both starting materials and test organisms on hand. This would reduce my work from years to weeks. I am anxious to pursue this work but find it more time consuming than I had thought to get the laboratory going. I am sorry to hear that you will be unable tocome here in October, but we will try to do the best we can in spite of this handicap. Sincerely yours, , a en KO he . <..
