RESEARCH CONSULTANT/Life Sciences JUN 2 6 1964 1901 PENNSYLVANIA AVE. N.W. SUITE 406, WASHINGTON 7, D. Cc. DON FLICKINGER, M.D. HOME 999-3257 PHONE: OFFICE 338-7266 25 June 1964 Dr. Joshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics Stanford University Medical School Palo Alto, California Dear Elliott and Josh: Trust you received the Soviet COSPAR Reports and found them of some passing interest. Personally, I believe their manned space flight program is slowing down because of funding problems rather than the discovery of some esoteric biologic aftermath of zero gravity. However, most of the local space medical savants here in Mecca are convinced of the latter hypothesis, so I am probably wrong, although I would concede the point more readily were there data to substantiate it. The letter to Colonel Keil sounded excellent to me as an opening gambit and Al Hetherington assured me that they were open to good, new, original approaches in the bio-instrumentation field. I found the enclosure, "An Instrumentation Crisis in Biology" extremely inter- esting even though my superficial knowledge of the field necessarily limits my comprehension in any appreciable depth. I'll bird dog further activities and interest levels at this end regarding your proposal and at the same time be alert for any other group moneys which might be looking for "good people and ideas" to support in this exciting area. With all good wishes and regards. Sincerely, Dow Don Flickinger Brig. General, USAF, Ret.
