PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY SERVICE (Directed by the Medical Research Council for the Ministry of Health) Central Enteric Reference Laboratory and Bureau, Telephone: COLINDALE 7041 (8 lines) Telegrams: DEFENDER, NORPHONE, LONDON. COLINDALE AVENUE, LonpDon, N.W.9. 31st August, 1953. Dear Dr. Lederberg, A few weeks ago I had to refuse, much to my regret, Dr. Anderson's request to send you the typing phages for Salm. typhi-murium, for which you had asked him. I enclose a copy of the Second Report to the International Committee for Enteric Phage Typing, which has now been sent out. The paragraph I marked on page 7 explains why the typhi-murium typing phages are not yet available for distribution. I was looking forward to the pleasure of meeting you at the Rome Congress and I was sorry to learn you will not be there. I hope another opportunity may offer itself in a not distant future. Yours sincerely, Professor J. Lederberg, Department of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, College of Agriculture, Agricultural Hall, Madison, 6, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
