OQ INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY January 30, 1957 Prof. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics University of Wisconsin Madison, Wisconsin Dear Josh: Apparently I have somehow missed requesting a reprint of your paper in the Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 2, 57) (1956), May I have one and, while you are at it, may I also havd reprints of such of your bacterial genetics papers as are available? I have only the Heredity 2, 145 (1948) review and I am participating with Tracy in a bacterial genetics seminar, We have become somewhat bogged down in problems of protoplast stability, etc. Our results became so irreproducible that we just have had to back off and learn some more about the procedure and general handling of the things. I can say pretty definitely that it is obvious to us that our protoplasts are far from identical to yours, We have tried by a considerable variety of methods to get reversion with no success whatsoever so far. It is obvious that the Versene causes irreversible changes alone in terms of viability of the cells, We may switch to your method yet! Talked to Norm Zinder a couple of weeks ago. I imagine you have heard from him regularly, but at any rate he is rather off of protoplasts at the moment. Sometimes I wish I was. With best regards-- Yours. sincerely, DF/er eee -
