June 22 -- 1961 Joshua Lederberg Ph.D. Stanford University. Dear Doctor: I wonder if you are aware of two volcanic Islands in Mono Lake. One island is supposed to have wild goats and is a "Sea Gull" hatching center -- it's neighbor has all degrees of heated pools -- "pot holes" of gases and numerous algae and shrimp. Red, green and black algae seem to have developed the ability to live in extremely hot water and may be a source of information for habitat in the extremes of outer space-- A lighted paper placed over one of the pot holes, reveals white fumes that seemingly bled[?] forth following the presence of the paper -- Perhaps sulfur gas-- There used to be a boat on the lake operated out of Mono. [ . . . ] by Mr. McPherson -- it was destroyed -- Kat Carson's daughter's headstone (Prarie [sic] Flower) who died in Mono digging in1800's during child birth is nearby -- marked by a bronze plate-- If you are interested you might send someone up to that area with a motor boat. Mrs. McPherson is usually at the hotel. Very truly yours, John. F. Fahey [ . . . ]
