Dear Elliott, thank you very much for your letter. I think it will be a good thing if : Vatthew will take the training post that you >. are offering him, and I am very grateful to = you for taking much trouble about it. Matthew is now 17:+ and is finishing high school, which with us lasts longer than in the U.S. His knowledge of physics will be about the level of the I.I.7. high school course. His school mathematics is scarce, and he has studied by himself dif- ferentiation. He should have no English trou- bles. If he gets interested in something he can make considerable’ work ¢*™* Although he may want even- tually to turn into Chemistry and Biology, I think it is good that he takes a degree in physics first. Any work he can do with an in- Spiring research worker will be good to hin, I am sure. As to question of him being paid: it is not very important, and in ay case especially fongratification of his ego. One difficulty is that his exams will finish on or around 15th July. We Should be able to be in Stanford on the 25th of July, and he could stay at least until the 15th or 30th of September, Alba, Matthew and I are looking forward to meet you and your family. Yours sincerely beceoe L.L. Cavalli-Sforza
