Istgenetica - Pavia Tel. 23.029 ; 29.038 — Indirizzo telegrafico : June 9th, 1961 Prof. Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Standford University ISTITUTO DI GENETICA UNIVERSITA DI PAVIA VIA SANT’ EPIFANIO, 14 PAVIA Standfford, Calif. U.S.A. Dear Dr. Lederberg, Dr Cavalli-Sforza has informed me of your kind interest in our work. i/e would be very inte- rested in testing the effect of the sulphonic analogues on the activation of diaminopimelic acid. At present, the existence of a dia- Minopimelic acid~specific sRNA seems very doubtful, especially after Lipmann's revision of his work on the biosynthesis of glutathione and Neuhaus! results on the biosynthesis of D-alanyl-D-alanine. As you suggest, the activation of diaminopimelic acid may be only the first step in a "stepwise addition" process similar to that reported by Ito and Strominger. Many thanks again for your courtesy and best personal regards. Yours sincerely, te Dr. Orio Ciferri wv JSUN15 196] wv Jory
