WASHINGTON SCHOOL OF MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE BARNES AND WOHL HOSPITALS 600 SOUTH KINGSHIGHWAY ST. LOUIS 10, MISSOURI 24 October, 1959 Dear Joshua, As yo: can imagine, I have been giving a 200d deal of thoight to the suggestion that I might be a candidate for yhe position at Stanford. The o:tcome of this soul~searching seems to me to be unambiguous: it woild be very unwise to submit my name for consideration. This would prove awkward=--I am inwilling to try to cope with the diverse heavy responsibilities involved since I feel sure that the effort entailed would frustrate my main aim, which is to continue an active laboratory existence. It is hard for me to take such a firm negative stand in the face of the obvious great attractiveness of the Stanford environment-- personally because of my many friends there, and, impersonally, because of its present uniquely outstanding intellectual climate. But in spite of these very great temptations to throw my hat into the ring, it would be dishonest or unrealistic on my part Ye (or both) to encourage further consideration of the matter. I need hardly tell you that I am deeply gratef || and immeasurably flattered by your having raised the question inthe first place. With warmest regards, and looking forward to seeing you in January, I am Stneerely, [le tae Cite Herman Ejsen
