Dear Professor Lederberg:

I can think of so many obstacles to prevent good
results that the dispatch of a microscope appears futile. The
size of your object requires high magnification and high
magnification in turn means a small field and very limited depth
of focus. These are controlled by the operator as is also the
adjustment of illumination.

You yourself suggest bringing back a sample which
to me is much more feasible. Then you could use short wave
illumination for greater definition.
