THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN ces MADISON 6 f “e 3 DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY July 25, 1960 Professor Joshua Lederberg Department of Genetics Medical Center Stanford University Palo Alto, California Dear Professor Lederberg: I can think of so many obstacles to prevent good results that the dispatch of a microscope appears futile. The size of your object requires high magnification and high magnification in turn means a small field and very limited depth of focus. These are controlled by the operator as is also the adjustment of illumination. You yourself suggest bringing back a sample which to me is much more feasible. Then you could use short wave illumination for greater definition. I wish you good luck in your project, Sincerely, : Sn Ao BD Dy Ae tE et = R. ©. Emmons Professor of Geology
