July 21, 1958 Dear Josh and Esther: I am pleased to extend my congratulations to you both. I trust that you will find Stanford even more exciting and congenial than Madison. I know that you both will add vastly to the scholarly climate there and I hope that you, in turn, will be amply rewarded. I know it has been with considerable deliberation that you have decided to leave your home and community; however, I am certain that you will quickly develop roots and become an integral part of Stanford. I must confer that I feel a personal loss by having this distance placed between us. But I am certain that we will still get together often. My very best wishes to you both. I hope to see you this fall. Gaylen
