I did indeed see your note in Nature.  Have you learned anything more about it?
Dr. Newcombe in our laboratory has found evidence for recombination and segregation in Coli--at least, it's the most likely explanation for his results.  His data leans more directly on segregation than on the recombinations themselves.  If you're in N.Y. one of these days, you ought to come out here and see his stuff.
