UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES 24, CALIFORNIA November 28, 1951. Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Department of Genetics, College of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin, Madison 6, Wisconsin, Dear Dr. Lederberg: Thank you kindly for your very interesting letter of November lst which I failed to acknowledge promptly. Under separate cover I have sent you a trans-~ plant of the Smith strain of Staphylococcus aureus which was used in our transformation experiments. The medium we used was not by Chapman and Stone but by Chapman and Stiles. It is a phenol @ red agar base which was sterilized in an autoclave. Then concentrated solutions of the various carbo- hydrates were filtered through Seitz filters and added aseptically to the melted agar base. The reference is: Chapman, G.H., and M. Stiles: Carbohydrate fermentation reactions of staphylococci, Am. J. Clin, Path., 10:380, 1940, I hope you will be able to check our results. I plan to continue the problem when I can interest a suitable graduate student, With kindest personal regards, Very sincerely yours, , ] at - if pe AY.
